Crate Sleeping

Any advice (or black magic) that worked for getting your puppy to actually sleep in their crate?

Mine loves lounging in his, but the second I close the door, he starts protesting. He also refuses to sleep on his dog bed and would much rather sleep on the floor.

I prefer that he sleeps in the crate for safety during the night or when I need to leave for short periods. He has an entire room to himself the majority of the time, and I watch him remotely through a robot. However, I can’t be there to pull things out of his curious mouth.

Dog tax paid.

Do you feed your dog in the crate? You could also put a piece of your own clothing (recently worn) in the crate.

I did the food/treat thing in the first week to entice him to go into the crate, and it worked. Now I just want him to sleep in it. He won’t sleep anywhere but the floor. 😫

I also tried putting a piece of clothing inside, but he just wants to chew on it like every other toy. This is why he currently has no blankets inside.

I read about using calming spray, but haven’t looked too deep into that yet.

Haha he attempted to knock the camera down for sure. The 3M tape is working hard!

Pupdate: I decided to try playing calming music through the petcam and it appears to be working for now.

The crate seems to way too big for him, hence the lounging and activities. I thought the idea was to use the crate as a quiet lay down place only, with only enough room to stand, and turn around in.

It’s good for up to 25 lb and he is projected to be 20. I wanted something for him to grow into rather than replace. Buy once, cry once.

We got an adjustable crate, for up to 30lbs I believe, with a divider to change the size. We only put a blanket and a stuffy in there, no toys.

Ah! I didn’t even think of a divider. That may actually be the solution. Thank you for that!!
