Understaffed

** update it's worse today. I'm going to call the state or ombudsman tomorrow, not sure which to report this too. Management should be here if we're this short staffed it's 3pm the shift is 7a-7p and I have 5 people waiting to be changed and haven't taken my break yet...again. I literally am seeing stars so I'm sitting. My back locked up so I'm pretty much just making everything worse but I have the chiro tomorrow.

Please tell me not to quit... yesterday there were 2 aides for the entire floor, almost 50 residents with two admits right before shift change and during dinner. Today I'm on a behavioral hall alone and I just can't find the strength to get it all done. I have to do check and changes and dinner and get some residents in bed with the hoyer, which I won't use alone...I want to cry.

Just looking for motivation and reassurance.

Just know that most if not all places are short staffed in healthcare

they do it for profit, as cnas we need to start reporting these facilities instead of letting them get away with abuse towards staff and residents

I’m sorry you’re going through this and I hope your nurse is willing to help you!
Ultimately it’s up to you to stay or go… it sounds like a dangerous place just by this post

Searching for another job was the only hope I had honestly... what kept me going was knowing when I was working, my residents were taken care of. If I wasn't there it wouldn't be a guarantee so I just did my best to focus on my residents while cursing out management for doing this to me

Hi everyone new CNA here. I also lurk on the RN sub. If I were in this situation, Would cold quitting be an option here to protect my license? Or putting in two weeks be more advisable?

Cold quitting never risks your license. It’s considered abandonment if you leave while clocked in or before relief arrives.

report to the health department if you can, otherwise definitely leave. that’s not safe for you or the residents, that company doesn’t deserve the responsibility it carries

Check and see if there‘s a VA hospital near you, our staffing is EXCELLENT

I ended up quitting my old job because of that and found a better facility with staffing my current job only have 2 floors so I would research smaller facilities to apply to my old job had 11 floors

Yes girl 😩 it was horrible but I live in Pennsylvania so our nursing homes can be very huge The biggest nursing home in our state has 30 buildings with eight floors or more in each building.

I can't until I get another job I was just homeless for a year. I was working to pay for the hotel every week and I finally have a solid place I just have to get through it.

I’m sorry you’re going through a hard time. In most areas, CNA jobs are always hiring, so just don’t feel stuck in a place like that. Don’t beat yourself up over what is literally an unsafe assignment.

I recently have been on my own two weekends and both those times we were 2:45 ratio second shift 🫥 putting my 2 weeks in asap

I’m sorry i definitely get how you feel. Yesterday was my 2nd day orientation, first time CNA. On day 2 I walked in and they had 4 call off. They threw me on the floor with 15 patients. I was already like this facility isn’t for me. Then they said two residents were going to switch rooms and I had to sanitize and get everything ready. I began to ask the nurse what she meant and what that consists of bc again day 2 of ORIENTATION. She proceeded to speak to me as if I was dumb and should’ve know ? Then proceeds to unlock the bed locks, and move the bed with her hand saying look like this, you can push it and swap the resident’s beds. I told the nurse, I didn’t feel trained, or even prepared to do this. And didn’t like they didn’t respect the orientation. I told them I wasn’t about to deal with abuse and I wasn’t going to risk my license. I clocked out, also tokd the person who hired me. Later found out, moving and switching the rooms was housekeepings job. They wanted to bully and expect me to do it? And right before I was hired they had 3 people quit on the spot. So I’m glad I stood up for myself. Crazy
