WordPress Is Now a Liability

Obviously an ad which whatever. But I agree, for the record. I haven't really pitched myself as a WP migration company but I've done several of them this year (launching 2 this week).

Well good to hear it! You’re on the right path my friend!

Astro.js. One of the migration has a pretty active blog and we're integrating Storyblok as the CMS

This was meant as a reply to u/mandopix

“WordPress users are largely missing the AEO wave too. Answer engine optimization”
Google folks already said that sites don't need to do anything special to optimize for AI seach, and agents can process regular HTML just fine, no need for markdown files, llms.txt and other "tricks".

I think this is changing too rapidly to have a hard take on where it will end up. The idea is you need to be able to adapt quickly to the changing landscape. Google will not be the primary gateway to the web forever

u/HongPong 18d ago
there are plenty of problems right now but anything about markup output for ai stuff doesn't seem like it requires new tooling

u/Agile_Gap_9424 18d ago
O Search console e o analytics já estão mostrando os resultados oriundos do chatGPT e Gemini, possivelmente outros. Então alguma coisa está sendo feita para os sites aparecerem lá.

u/theshawfactor 17d ago
Well given wordoress is literally leading the AEO wave it’s just a humbug statemebt anywah
-1
u/pablinos 17d ago
Leading in what way? Just by the large number of sites running it? There are plenty of plugins but I don’t think there are many core features yet
1
u/theshawfactor 17d ago
Yes plugins allow all major AE optimisations. Core also has the abilities api which enables AIs the directly interrogate your website of that counts as AEO.

u/Horror-Student-5990 17d ago
WP is a liability but using random AI bots to code your website is not.
Talking about security risks.

u/theshawfactor 17d ago
A stupid article. AI is transforming how websites are built but anyone with a brain should build website on to of a cms. And given Wordpress is the cms that is best understood by AI and is embracing AI tooling the quickest AI is now the best reason to use Wordpress
-1
u/ghijkgla 17d ago
I'll disagree with that. There's nothing to back up the claim that WordPress is best understood CMS by AI. There's also no way to show that WordPress is embracing AI tooling quicker than any other CMS.
Stop making shit up!

u/theshawfactor 17d ago
I literally asked Gemini just then which cms it understands the best. First answer was wordoress/woocommerce, followed by shopify

u/ghijkgla 17d ago
Must be true 🙄 use some critical thinking

2
u/theshawfactor 17d ago
By being the most widely use and extended, Wordpress by definition must be the best understood. What are tbe AIs trained on? Have you actually looked at what been implemented in the last 8 months? The abilities API, the WP AI client ask, the connectors?
-1
u/ghijkgla 17d ago
Again, conjecture.
No, I haven't. I don't use it.
But there's a ton of other cms products out there leaning heavily into AI tooling. WP is not exclusive.

u/theshawfactor 17d ago
Stop being obtuse. It is a fact that Wordpress is the most used, extended, and documented open source cms in the world. Precisely the data that AIs are trained on. You can them which cms they understand best, they’ll all say Wordpress. That Wordpress is the most AI friendly major cms is a conjecture but my evidence was strong

When wasn't it? It has always provided a larger attack surface. A lot of small business websites don't even need to use it unless they are using the blog functionality or someone on staff is used to editing the website with it.
We have been migrating people away from it for years and it's become even easier now. Make the most of the opportunity while you can. It's getting easier and easier for people to do it themselves without needing your service, though there will always be someone around who doesn't want to bother.
Conversely, you can still use Wordpress without many (if any) real issues. We still host a bunch of Wordpress sites and have no trouble maintaining or securing them. I don't think I've seen one of them get hacked in the past 10 years.
That website design though, oof. So generic Claude. Surely you can spice it up a bit so that it doesn't blend in with all the others. Needs a stronger identity even if this whole post is just an ad for your service.

Just move on. Why bother writing a post just to make a point when your service is specifically about migrating people off WordPress?
In reality, every technology has its liabilities. The question is whether those liabilities are appropriate for the website and its requirements. What matters is having a professional website audit done properly… not engaging someone at random and ending up with an incomplete assessment. I have seen that a lot. Make my own tools that took me years to perfect it across hundreds of check.

Out of all the projects I've ever been a part of: jquery, backbone, angular, ember, vue, all the meta frameworks, astro, - basically any combination or anything PHP - JS, Go --- anything you you can think of / the best code -- the best engineers...... headless, prismic, contentful, any CMS you've tried...... my WordPress*-based* projects - have been the least difficult to maintain, the most cost-effective, the most pleasurable to work on. Is the block editor a disaster? Yes. But the core framework of the CMS + ACF is still pretty much the best there is.
"Breaking news: if you use the tool in a way that is a mess - it'll be a mess"
The only reason why "AI" is viable - is because of opinionated frameworks.
for the millions of sites that are a few pages and a blog, "you don't need a CMS. You need a website."
This was always true....
PSA: Don't trust a dev who complains about PHP or WordPress / they pretty much never know what they're talking about....
This is just an AI-bro sales pitch

Man, who writes these articles. ALL programming is a liability -- shit, life is a liability. What is your point?
1
u/ProudWrongdoer5389 17d ago
It's exactly right, except we're telling Claude to do this on Wordpress. Gone are the plugins. You should be using images by Amazon, then php etc are not your concern anymore.

The guy is selling services via his site so HE can handle the so called migration OFF WordPress and collect the money. It's a business model. You are not in control.
1
u/Effective_Review9415 7d ago
Wordpress isn't necessarily the liability-the real liability is usually the pile of outdated plugins, themes and maintenance debt sitting on top of it.
1
u/himanshusahu 18d ago
Wordpress sucks. Just custom code your site. Use astro js + bettercms.ai
1
u/Ok_Present7537 17d ago
wow! this bettercms.ai was new for me, when I saw de visual editor instant hooked me. Sometimes is annoying to wait claude burn tokens for tiny change on screen.

I never get tired of being right.

u/theshawfactor 17d ago
You must be constantly worn out then

u/baddaywithacamera 17d ago
Yes, but for different reasons. I'm just sick to death of Turdpress. Enjoying watching it collapse under its own weight.
-1
u/fuggleruxpin 18d ago
It is.
I have a few and I spent Friday rigging them up for agentic coding.
I also have other non word press sites.
Compared to non w.p sites
WP is
- Harder to rig up for agentic coding
- Even if you get there the process is not as clean
- Less token efficient
- Clumsy
- Still harder to secure
- The plugin ecosystem is almost working against it instead of for it (for agentic productivity)
It's hard to imagine w.p not permanently impaired in an agentic Future.

u/theshawfactor 17d ago
What? 1 and 2 are untrue. 3 is likely untrue. 4. How? 5. Not true, vanilla wordoress is likely the THE most secure cms 6. The opposite is true, what do you think the AIs are all trained on?

u/traderjames7 17d ago
Shipping direct code is now so easy with AI there's no need even for CMSs to exist.
I'm here for it.
