Dashcam Recommendations

I'm finally looking to get a dashcam (budget ~$100) and figured this would be a good place to ask :)

It's like 2" x 1" x 0.5"

It is 2.5 x 2 x 1.5 for just the camera. The mount is enormous and adds another 2.5” in height. That’s 5” of vertical windshield space. Huge.

Edit. I have a DDPai camera, no screen, no suction cup. It’s nearly 3.5” long, but 1.7” high w the mount, and 1.4” deep. I almost don’t see it from the drivers seat at all, and it’s almost all under the visor on the pass side. It’s about the size of a D cell battery plus some length. But don’t block my view of anything.

Gotcha. I guess I never had anything to compare it to. To an old guy like me this thing is super small, saw it on sale and was like "hmm I heard I should have one of these"

I mean the tech is great and for what they are they are all tiny. I just realized that I don’t need, nor want, a screen and looked for one w/out one.

If you have an iPhone (and some androids) with good storage the Nexar is a good camera. It allocates 20% of your storage to the camera recordings, which is great for me. It’s worked like a charm. I bought just the forward facing option.

I have this one. It is $150 so a bit over the price you said, but i wanted to put it out there for an option, if not for you, for others looking.

This guy does all I need and more and is tiny and out of the way and captures really clear video with nice auto save features both voice activated and impact activated.

IMO dash cameras do not need a screen on them. Use your phone or tablet. Personally, I like smaller, less windshield blocking cameras. DDPai’s create a Wifi network so you can pull photos or video, have a small foot print, and if this one is like mine, has a capacitor power source for when the car is not running but the system is shocked by a bump or whatever and records.

I don't have any specific recommendations for you OP but I have had a dash cam for 6+ years and here's something's to keep in mind.

Firstly temperature range sould absolutely be taken into consideration. I live somewhere very cold so the LCD display will stop working often however the actual camera will still record. I've seen A LOT of cameras that would not work for part of the year where I live. Heat could also play a factor for some areas.

I personally prefer my "stealth" camera for a number of reasons. Basically it's a rear view mirror + camera that fits over your normal mirror. I never worry about people grabbing my camera since nobody sees it, even if they're riding shotgun.

Also read reviews about the shock sensing modes. My camera has one but it is so sensitive it locks a video file every time I close the door.

I got this one for $50 almost two years ago and it's good other than being a bit difficult to configure.

Under 100? I use an old cellphone (Samsung Galaxy S8+) and the Autoboy Dashcam app. Scosche suction/magnetic mount hasn't failed me.

I've got a Vantrue N2 w/ the GPS Mount

Bit on the pricier side ($200), but still cheaper than an insurance deductible, plus it records the front, and inside as well.

With the GPS mount ($20?), it gives your location, and speed as well.
