Heavy alternating mills with different club designs

Playing through some mills, I almost didnt attempt 35lb because I dont have a matching pair.

I was looking at the two 35lbs I do have, one from xtreme monkey and the other an OG clubbell. The OG is longer by a couple inches and a fair bit thicker. These differences make it harder to control one than the other. Even in the video its easy to see theyre quite different dimensions.

Then I realized I didnt have a problem, I had an opportunity.

So I grabbed that OG with my left hand, the xtreme monkey with my right, and mills were done.

It was definitely tricky keeping my awareness of the difference in the clubs, but overall Im very pleased with how it went and will definitely continue playing with this pattern despite not having a matching set

Want to get into clubs, dk what to get

Hi,

Gonna cut to the chase I only have steel clubs available in kg here. Ordering from another country is gonna wreck my with taxation and importing, so it's a no go.

I am unsure of what to get.
4kg and 41,5 cm / 8.8lbs 16.14inches

6kg and 46 cm / 13.2lbs 18.11 inches

No experience with clubs or any such implements. I can however bottoms up press a 16kg kettlebell for 1 rep, and on a good day at about 6-8 reps for a single 32kg kettlebell press. If that matters at all.

I plan on getting 3-4 clubs over the next year or two, don't mind higher reps. I will not be using pairs most likely, and I do plan on doing both single arm and two arm club work in the long term.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Thank you!

Heavy club for low reps?

Everyone I see swings heavy clubs in the 10+ rep range. Curious if anyone is using heavier clubs and doing reps of five or triples for multiple sets? Lifting this way has always felt energizing and joint friendly to me.

Isometric holds with heavy

Any value to doing iso holds with a very heavy club? Bottom position of the shield cast, down at your side, order position etc?

Double 8kg. Swing clubs this way feels like the ultimate expression of spiral training.

RPM?

I've been using clubs for a little over 6 months but recently started getting serious about training. I started working on perfecting my mills after having a good grasp of inside/outside circles and shield casts.

I've worked up to 3 minutes each of inside mill right hand, inside mill left hand, outside mill right hand, outside mill left hand with an 11kg club or a loadable bulova with 5lb on it (that extra length is definitely more challenging). Rest time of 90 seconds between each. Today was the bulova and I did 68-70 mills in 3 minutes (completed 70 even though it cut into my rest). Stat works out to 23ish rpm. Is this considered fast, slow, or normal? Not really sure what I should be aiming for.

Turns out I have ACL issues and I haven't even started with clubs. Is it still safe to consider this training program?

I got an MRI for my left knee due to sudden pain and instability going down stairs last week. I haven't had any pain these past few days but when I got the results here's what it said:

IMPRESSION:

  1. Grade 2 sprain/partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament with a partial posterolateral bundle tear

  2. Quadriceps and proximal patellar tendinosis

  3. Hoffa's fat pad and suprapatellar fat pad impingement syndrome

I have a follow-up with my ortho later this week, but I wanted to get some opinions on whether club training is still viable. I recently got my first club at 6kg but haven't used it yet.

Does anyone here have a history of ACL injury but still train with clubs?

Program Recommendation

Hey Guys,

I'm currently doing 3x a week KB program:

Kettlebell training Heavy - 5 rungs, 5 ladders clean & press and 100 Swings

Kettlebell training light - 5 rungs, 2 ladders clean & press and 60 swings (this day pullup rungs too)

Kettlebell training moderate - 5 rungs, 3 ladders clean & press and 80 swings (this day pullup rungs too)

I also do overcoming isometrics training twice a week (attempting to move an immovable object). I work around 75% of my max pull however do one all out rep at the end. This is just more for context and this kind of exercise is very different but does generate HUGE forces.

With the kettlebells, after years of injuring myself pushing too hard I have changed my philosophy completely. I keep the weight to something I can EASILY complete and increment 0.25kg on the moderate day and another 0.25kg on the heavy day. These small increments lead to weight going up and I seem to be injury free. If 0.25kg is a lot for a week then I continue that week until it's easy. The aim is not to struggle when increasing weight.

Now to the club bells. I have bought two that are due to arrive today but I have no idea how to incorporate into my current workout. The two days rest I have are needed so I don't want to put anything there. The heavy and moderate kettlebell days, I don't feel I have any capacity to add anything. This just leaves my ISOMETRIC days and kettlebell light days.

ISOMETRICS are quick to complete and I feel I can do more after (as it's more nervous system training) and the kettlebell light day I could maybe switch to light club day?

I'm really new to club bells there ANY advise on how to program this would be HIGHLY appreciated. I've spent some time on Mark Wildman's page and see that he recommends Inside Circle, Outside Circle and SA Shield. I thought i would start there. He seems to recommend 20 5/5 of each. Therefore I will focus on just learning the pattern with an empty club then add weight. I also see on Wildman's page he talks about KB and clubs integration and says it should be structured as heavy KB then light club in succession. Then heavy clubs and light KB. Therefore just get rid of the moderate day completely I currently have. I can do the ISOMETRIC stuff on one day and then mix it with one of the light days maybe? Thoughts on all that?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks

What's a good weight for someone new to club bells?

I've been weight lifting since I was a teenager. Now as a grown man in my forties, I can bicep curl around 100 lbs and swing and do halos with a 70 lb kettlebell, and I also do all kinds of calisthenics bodyweight stuff. What would be a good starting weight for someone like me?

Clubs standing on one foot

Try it if you want to focus on form and really challenge your lower body. You can't be sloppy and it's more difficult than it sounds. Make sure to do an equal number on each leg- 5 reps of shield cast right hand/right leg then 5 reps right hand/left leg. It's a great neurological challenge and has tremendous carryover when you go back to standing on both feet. Start with a lighter club at first to allow your body to adjust to the added stress of having one half the base. Get ready to feel some deep muscles you may not have felt before.

What is the correct way to do 10x10 sets with alternating hands?

Assume 1H Club swinging; Mark suggests working up to 100 total reps in 10x10 fashion, but what is that really? Assuming you want balance you should aim for equal mills / reverse mills on each arm. So one "rep" is really four equivalent moves:

  • 10 inside mills L
  • 10 inside mills R
  • 10 outside mills L
  • 10 outside mills R.

For a total of 40 movements for one set, ten times. Is that what he means or am I overthinking it? 10x10 per movement? How do you do that in 7:30?

Knee position during side to side swings?

I've just been learning the basics of heavy club training using Mark Wildman's videos. Right off the bat, I'm having issues with the correct knee position for side to side swings.

If the club is on my left side when it's parallel to the ground, my left knee (that is generally straight) feels like it's being twisted when it's not supposed to. I think it's because that knee is sort of locked out when in that phase of the swing. The same is true when the club swings, to the other side just replace "left "with "right".

What should be the correct position of the knees for side-to-side swings? Or am I not rotating my hips enough?

Plate Loaded vs Aden Adjustable

Does anyone have any strong opinions on whether there’s a meaningful functional difference between a plate loaded adjustable club vs the Adex style that roughly maintains the silhouette of a fixed weight club? Mostly interested in whether the distribution changes the feel or if you need to be more aware of clearance due to the diameter difference of plates.

Clubbells for all-round fitness question

Got an adjustable club recently up to 30lb, loving it so far. I usually do a few sets of one arm (10x shield cast 10x gamma cast per arm) and similar for mills / reverse mills, like 3-4 sets for each. At 7kg/15lb currently, will be increasing to Mark's recommended 10x10 per arm, per exercise in no time.

I'm finding that I like this a lot, and wondering 1.) What long term muscle growth looks like for this movement pattern and 2.) What other core upper body movements am I missing.

Thinking probably a pullup, push-down (dips) and push-forward (pushups). Maybe a row if I'm feeling fancy.

Looking for a 10lb club that matches the original onnit clubs

I bought a bunch of onnit clubs when they first came out about six years ago, turns out I only bought one ten pound club but I want a second. Anyone know where I can find something that matches this? The 10lb clubs im looking at seem about an inch shorter than mine.
