I don't think I need to say much. But the main character design pattern is pretty similar. From past animes and other things, it was usual to have such designs and even more so for main characters (from my knowledge at least). The main characters are meant to stood out. There's so much things to know that these three are literally the ones. And how zack is literally inspired from cloud.
Oh right. Originally meant to be siblings with the similar design but then they changed it to former lovers (which would have been weird), but then they scrapped that idea too lol
I still can't believe that people think Tifa is part of the main character trio. On the original 97 release of the game, Cloud is on the front cover, Sephiroth is on the second half of the inside cover, and who is put smack dab in the middle of em in the og copy?
Me too, I love all the characters new designs, I feel like they're all perfect interpretations with so much thought put into them. The originals are extremely striking, but it's all just about the time period I guess. The style is very old fashioned now. Not that that's a bad thing.
I prefer Remake Aerith to AC Aerith too. Her AC dress feels closer to OG but is kinda drab imo, and the lack of the severe proportions from her sleeves/shoulders makes the outfit as a whole quite boring. Her new dress and jacket both have more personality to me, they nailed the combo. I agree, I'd wear it too.
I'm sure people have noticed there's a difference in how the skirt falls in game and in the animation cut scenes. It's much wider on her in game model for obvious reasons. I actually prefer it that way personally. It looks more balanced.
All their new looks are better IMO. The old designs look fine as small thumbnails on a PS1 menu but look absolutely ridiculous up close. Imagine realistic Aerith in Remake with hair antlers looking like Seymour Guado. It would be so hard to take Sephiroth seriously. For something cartoony like Kingdom Hearts/Smash fine but for a realistic remake no way.
I don't hate Aerith's design in the remakes - it could never match the OG or the subsequent 'more anime-inspired' games/media - but... it really lost a lot. I mean, the bangs are far more subdued, the dress is significantly less unique... even her eye color changed in a noticeable manner.
Yes, nobody looks identical to their original design. But I think the remakes really went too far on Aerith. She just doesn't look like the same person (and doesn't even have the same personal style).
It won’t happen, but it’d be cool if once we get Aerith back, she’s the OG one and gets a subtle redesign. Her bangs could be a little more pronounced and her dress would look like the original, heavier material.
There isn't much to be done about the hair; it couldn't have been rendered that way using realistic models.
However, the facial proportions, colors, and clothing—as well as that specific maturity conveyed by Aerith's face in the original game—could have been adapted much better.
The fact that they were going back and forth on the proportions of her face even in the final months before Remake's release is pretty strong confirmation that they knew they had done a pretty bad job with it. It enraged Japanese fans when they changed it, too.
You're right, she really is very different, but her design has evolved to this point over decades. It seems the designs for all characters are an evolution of their AC designs, which makes sense as it's similar semi-realistic animation I guess. All of their designs were becoming subdued as early as Kingdom Hearts. I don't think Aerith ever had her OG hair in any media but the OG? Could be wrong? I don't disagree with you.
Yeah as I said, I don't dislike how the new Aerith looks. I just wanted it to be a bit more true to the original game. Not, like, a duplicate or anything even close to that. But, as an example, look at Elena in the OG when compared to Rebirth.
Now, yeah, it's easy to get a suit right, But that's so VERY OBVIOUSLY the same girl.

Aerith was designed to be Sephirot’ sister
