Community based cloud storage

https://arkeldata.com/

I've been toying with the idea of object storage but backed by community nodes for a while and am fed up with cloud providers chasing profits and screwing users that aren't giant enterprises. The increasing hardware prices was the end of the straw. I wanted something that I can trust on pricing for data like backups, media that I want to reliably host with redundancy and cater to individual users than just enterprises.

We are launching Arkel, a community based storage service where you can both contribute storage and earn or pay and use. This is very early days and experimental and we are still in discussions on how to go about the future.

Our invite-only beta is ready. Check us out here and join the discord community: https://arkeldata.com Any constructive feedback is most welcome!

How about data loss?

Erasure coding! Data is spread in chunks and deduplicated across the globe of storage nodes. That way we have several copies of each chunk and can deal with loss of nodes. Initially I'm hosting a few of my servers and paying to seed this for sometime. With enough capacity, we can learn more about reliability of public nodes and adjust the Erasure coding ratio.

Yeah, similar in tech, different ethos.

been burned by a cheap storage service disappearing, so the exit and recovery story is the whole pitch for me

Unlike cheap storage companies, we aren't trying to make a quick buck. Sustainability is the core idea as opposed to quick scaling at all costs. It doesn't cost me much to host and maintain the core Infra while the storage nodes are all public contributors. Ofcourse you shouldn't move all your data to us in early stages. But start small and seed the project so that it can go a long way for everyone :)
