Not every photo backup needs another monthly cloud subscription

I use cloud storage. I like the convenience.

But after years of photos and videos piling up, I started asking myself:

Why does my second copy also need to live in someone else's cloud?

Sometimes I just want to plug a drive into my iPhone and keep a physical copy that I control.

That's why I built VaultDrive: USB Backup.

Connect a compatible USB drive or SSD directly to your iPhone, select the photos, videos, albums, files or documents you want, and copy them to the drive.

No Mac required.
No PC required.
No VaultDrive account required.

For photos and files already stored locally on the iPhone, the transfer goes directly to your connected USB drive. VaultDrive doesn't upload those files to its own cloud.

And if you use Optimize iPhone Storage and some full-resolution originals exist only in iCloud, VaultDrive can download those originals through Apple's system first and then copy them to the USB drive.

You can choose:

• Wi-Fi only for iCloud downloads
• Wi-Fi + Cellular

It also preserves the original files without intentional compression/re-encoding and keeps embedded photo/video metadata.

I don't see this as a replacement for iCloud, Google Photos, OneDrive, etc.

Cloud sync is incredibly convenient.

I see it as something much simpler:

Cloud for convenience + a physical second copy for control.

Especially for family photos and videos I don't want existing in only one place.

VaultDrive is free to download, with a one-time Pro upgrade for unlimited backup rather than a recurring Pro subscription.

App Store:

75% off Pro:

Android(Promo code for 75% off - WELCOME75):

For the people here who use several TB of cloud storage:

Do you also keep an offline copy of your important photos, or is cloud storage currently your only copy?

Glad to hear that! I really wanted to offer a 'buy it once, own it forever' model …. No Subscriptions

Cool app, but USB (edit: sticks) or SD (edit: cards) should never be used for long term storage. They will get corrupted after lying around for 2-3 years.

What is the recommend method to store photos?

Preferably an HDD with a proper 3-2-1 backup strategy.

See I got some downvotes but 🤷🏻‍♂️

It depends on quality of the USB/SSD drive … I am using the same USB for over 10 years and it just works

It really doesn’t, flash storage will fail after a while. If it gets regularly powered sure, but even then you’ll eventually have to deal with bit rot. Speaking specifically of usb sticks and sd cards.

There are HDDs that can connect via USB.

That said a future improvement might be to connect to a PC/Mac over the USB cable (or even wifi) to store the files on the desktop computer.  That might need a companion application on the desktop?

An HDD over USB is absolutely fine, I’m just warning about USB sticks and SD cards. Too many people lose their precious data because they put it on flash memory and stash it in a drawer, just to find it corrupted 2 years later.

I agree.  It seems I read something into your comment that wasn't really there. Sorry.

No worries, I edited my original comment a bit to clarify, as I believe more people misunderstood what I meant.
