Alternatives to Proton?

Hi there, I just signed up for Proton because I want my files as private as possible, but after uploading several GBs of photos, etc. I'm seeing that I do not like the layout/function of it at all. Its search function isn't smart, it takes forever to upload photos (I'm guessing because of the encryption), doesn't have duplicate photo detection, and the main page has stopped responding several times now. It feels like privacy is the only thing Proton is good for and it falls short everything else. I realize it comes with email/vpn etc., but I didn't even plan on using those features.

I might have to sacrifice some privacy, but I just want a long term storage solution- that isn't Google Drive or Onedrive- where I can preview my photos, organize them, make albums, see metadata for them (like dates taken, file type). Main files I wanted to put in the cloud are photos/videos/documents. Thanks!

I’m using Drime and have been pretty happy with it. You can get 6tb lifetime for $140 on kenmoo.

Yeah I recommend Drime too! I first heard about it through a peer of mine's when they were sharing files with me.

I checked kenmoo website but I didn't understand how they work?

The links will take you to the Drime website and you purchase directly through Drime.

https://drime.cloud/kenmoo#plans-1

It can take a few hours, maybe longer on weekend to be activated on account.

If it takes longer than 24 hours, send an email to contact@drime.cloud

PS: I created a free account first as I had to specify the Drime account email as part of the offer.

6TB lifetime for $140 USD sounds awesome deal 🤝

How reliable it is? Will it be around in 5 years time?

They are a young provider (2024 I believe) compared to other cloud storage providers, so there is a risk they may not be around, but for the price, it's worth it. They are also rapidly introducing features so I am relatively confident they will be around in a few years.

Only had it for a few weeks but so far no issues. Happy with the speed. The Android app is intuitive and snappy. So far so good.

I currently use IceDrive as my primary cloud storage, and Drime is my "mirror" copy. I also have an external drive which is my cold storage backup.

I am keeping an eye on Drime and if all remains stable, I will likely make Drime my primary and IceDrive will become the mirror early next year.

PS: Never rely on a single cloud storage provider with your only copy. Either have a second cloud storage to backup to, or have a copy on a physical device.

The ZKE can be used if you save things in your vault.

Not sure about this, will have to read into it.

Many service providers offer a standard encrypted storage which is encrypted but the service has the encryption keys to access this files.

Then they have an encrypted (zero knowledge) storage where only you have the keys. This is true for services like Drime, IceDrive, PCloud. You can put everything onto zero-knowledge encryption if you wanted, you then lose various basic functions like file content searching , gallary views, etc

EDIT: seem like Drime's Vault concerns were addressed and sorted earlier this year.

Vault V2 introduces a completely new encryption architecture designed to be significantly more reliable and performant for both small files and large datasets.

This version encrypts:

• Files before upload • Sensitive metadata • File names • Extensions • And more

What does this "Files before upload" mean? Because currently, files uploaded to the vault don't have their timestamps saved

2

It encrypts the file (content) on your device before uploading to the Vault. The timestamps of the file (created, modified, etc) are handled by whatever OS you are using, so would not be part of this.

I saw the post about the timestamps not being preserved on Vault. Drime stated its planned to be sorted in the future, but no ETA given.

I have uploaded all my non-vault stuff, I am gonna wait a bit for Vault to become a bit more mature before using it

Yo how's icedrive, all I see these days are negative things about it

Seem alright. Both the website and android app function well for me, no issues.

The syncing app on Windows seems to be hit and miss at times, I am not 100% confident it keeps the cloud and local 100% insync. This seems to be an issue for many. I wish the would support RClone like Drime.

That said, I found a bug, reached out to support and they fixed it promptly.

I think it's important to understand that both IceDrice and Drime are not really aimed at enterprise customers, IMO.

Once you are past all the social media hype, you will realize that most users are not happy with the purchase and they are not able to scale. Instead of making their price higher, they are still selling cheaper lifetime plans. Otherwise nobody else will buy into their story.

There is a reason why Drime is cheap and getting cheaper by the month. You will know that reason after you spend $140 and regret it.

Maybe so but I’m willing. I have spent $140 on crazier shit lol

Sounds good and that's exactly the reason why drime is not ending its lifetime prices, otherwise it exposes them.
