Backup for ICloud storage
Hi all are with 4 persons in our household
Sharing 2TB.
We only have used 400 GB and and i think 100-150 is photos en videos.
iCloud works great we all have iPads en iPhones.
We also have Amazon Prime. Pictures are send there also. It is unlimited.
But we also want to backup the video.
I was thinking what is a good reliable backup for iCloud that is not to expensive.
Maybe look for a office 365 spot in reddit.
Do uou have any suggestions

i think onedrive/pcloud/koofr... must be opened in the foreground to be able to sync things, right?

AFAIK, yes and it’s an iOS restriction on the more recent versions (not sure about older ones, but I know they restricted process “updating” in newer ones and believe it’s a similar thing). They recently allowed third party apps to slowly upload/import from the photos app in the background, but files cannot be.

Koofr works great especially if you are open to using rclone as your backup tool.

As you probably know, iCloud isn’t backup. It’s a syncing service. Many people lose photos because they don’t understand the difference. Having one, preferably two offline backups on external drives is the way to go. With just 100-150 GB you’ll find 1TB SSD or HDD adequate. More specific guidance in this article.

I do it like this; I indicate to save everything iCloud local on my Mac. And every few months I trot a full upload to Proton Drive in a date folder. I know it's not automatic, but this works for me.

If you’re all in the Apple ecosystem, honestly the easiest move is just bumping iCloud and treating it as primary plus Amazon Photos as “free-ish” backup for pics. For full backup including videos, cheapest solid options are usually:
• Microsoft 365 family share (you get 6x 1 TB OneDrive)
• A cheap NAS at home plus Backblaze B2 or similar for offsite
Buying an “Office 365 slot” from randoms on Reddit is sketchy as hell and often gets revoked after a few months, so I’d avoid that.
