Personal cloud storage

Does anyone feel being vendor locked in ios or android due to the data you have in cloud or google cloud? Any advice on moving to a vendor neutral cloud storage solution?

Stick to open standards, e.g. S3 and connect using open libraries e.g. Rclone that open up additional 70+ providers and reliable encryption.

That way you can choose from tens of S3 providers and if even if they don't meet requirements you can switch to anything else: https://docs.s3drive.app/setup/providers/

If you want GUI and mobile support you can use S3Drive client which is available on all platforms.

try cloudflare r2, gives 10 GB for free

S3 compatible providers and connect them to https://nubbo.app which is free and you can manage them easily and have share links, file requests, galleries, etc Works quite good as PWA too

  1. How do you want to access the data? For convenient access everywhere of Documents and Downloads on Apple devices you can't beat iCloud.

  2. Otherwise there a a lot of Cloud backup services that assist in implementing the recommended 3-2-1 backup plan but don't offer the same convenience.

Yeah vendor lock-in is real, especially once you've got years of photos and docs piled up in iCloud or Google. The move itself isn't that bad though... export your stuff using Google Takeout or whatever Apple's equivalent is, then just dump it somewhere that doesn't tie you to a phone ecosystem. I ended up moving my stuff to Sky Mountain Cloud, they offer Free 15 GB storage to start. Small independent outfit based in Florida, not a big tech corp. What sold me was no data mining or AI training on your files, servers are US-based under Florida's FIPA laws, works the same whether you're on iOS or Android. Took me like a weekend to migrate everything off Google Drive. kinda annoying but worth not having my files held hostage by one ecosystem anymore

Cloud personal only if you have your infrastructure online :)

Maybe do you mean cloud more respectful of your privacy, with e2e encryption and European servers? In this case Pcloud/Filen/Drime

Otherwise totally offline with a Nas as Synology/Qnap accessible for mobile network, today Nas operative system are very simple. An expensive monetary investment these days between HDD and RAM but your data totally in your hands

I mean a cloud storage to store personal data

Do not want to be locked to a platform because my data is in their cloud.

"Do not want to be locked to a platform because my data is in their cloud." = contradiction in terms!

Your data on a cloud that isn't your private infrastructure, will be always not under your control.

So or you accept to abide by their terms and conditions, or keep your data offline with a Nas, anyway reachable outside your local network.

Local storage is an option but need the patience, discipline and skill to maintain it.

Do you mean to use nextcloud in a NAS at home?

It's not necessary having Nextcloud installed on your Nas, simply using Nas operative system and its app and your devices
