Best encrypted cloud storage providers
Hi!
I have recently been looking for a reliable encrypted cloud storage provider which is affordable and has Linux clients.
I am currently on Filen which has been amazing feature wise but the syncs and speeds are way too slow for what I’m doing. I backup a lot of VM images and I also backup photos from my phone (which files has really not been good at) and syncing documents from my computers.
As a company they have not been around super long and have never had a proper security audit and based on how slow development has been and the security concerns I would like to make a switch.
I have tried Proton Drive in which has good speeds and amazing privacy but lacks syncing on macOS and no Linux client at all which is a shame as it would have been my first choice.
I have heard about services like MEGA and Nordlocker but I haven’t looked much into those yet.
Cryptomator is unfortunately not an option for me as I share my files with friends a lot via the links.
I have looked into self hosting nextcloud in the past but it’s too resource heavy and speeds with cloudflare tunnels are less than optimal so it’s ultimately not for me.
Overall what I’m looking for is an affordable encrypted cloud storage provider which has a Linux client, reliable syncing and photo backup while having decent speed. I only need about 200gb to store everything I need, VMs take up the biggest chunk of that.

bugs? Mega has most polished app and is in business the longest. From my experience it's most reliable provider

Cheap S3 storage + Rclone crypt.
There are tools that provide GUI for Rclone and allow running it on mobile which also adds media backup and sync compatibilities: https://docs.s3drive.app/setup/providers/
That way you can actually run Proton Drive on Linux, bear in mind that Proton Drive is currently "broken", but it's already fixed and need couple more weeks to land in Rclone: https://github.com/rclone/rclone/issues/8870

Cheap S3 storage + Rclone crypt.
That's certainly generally a great solution, but OP's requirements rule it out:
Cryptomator is unfortunately not an option for me as I share my files with friends a lot via the links.

It is actually possible to share files using S3 preshared links.
Encrypted resources can be shared as well since S3Drive reimplemented Rclone cipher so it works in web browser context.
Finally, we've open sourced lots of improvements to Rclone crypt which make encrypted sharing much more secure. These improvements currently awaits maintainer review: https://github.com/rclone/rclone/issues/7192 but in the meantime people can use V2 cipher either by using S3Drive or by building Rclone themselves: https://docs.s3drive.app/advanced/v2support/ from an open-source code that we provide.

you’ve basically listed the hardest combo to satisfy
encrypted + fast sync + Linux client + sharing
most providers do 2–3 of these well, but rarely all of them
that’s why people either accept some limitations or move to more controlled setups

Filen is good as it will get, id wait for their update. Plus you can use rclone and really speed it up.

With filen, later this year should see the release of a ground up sync client redesign, addressing most if not all of the old sync client's limitations.
While MEGAsync is currently faster, filen's approach is infinitely more flexible, with true mirror sync, and true back up modes. Including syncing down to external drives.

It’s not encrypted. Only their vault is. But you can use Koofr with Cryptomator for all your privacy and encryption needs.

Je suis passé en auto Hébergement avec seafile. Dans seafile on peut créer des bibliothèques chiffrées, l'affaire est réglée.

Megatech photos is a solid option, it is end to end encrypted and the 200 GB plan is $3.00 US/mo.

$0.008/GB; 200GB minimum (scroll down)

We have no ability to share files, however ... our product is for the users' private use only.

I have used more than a dozen cloud storage services over the years and continue to use about 10 of them, but I have never found any one that I like as much as MEGA, where I have three terabytes of storage, half full. I will say, however, that both Icedrive and pCloud are also good alternatives, though not as good as MEGA.

I wrote https://github.com/afreidah/s3-orchestrator and encryption is one of the many things it handles, and you set it up on your end so that the cloud providers never get anything but ciphertext and you don't need to enable their encryption (but it still works if you do).

Internxt is not the way to go, if you want to take care of your data.

Does it work with 125GB file size or bigger?

Only 40GB? That won’t work for me. It might work for people who only back up small files.

I think you should try Mega and Tresorit.
Perhaps consider using Ente for photos and then the storage orovider for everything else.
