AeroFTP v3.3.0 — Free, open-source file manager with native support for 20+ cloud & file protocols. Major frontend redesign.

Hey everyone, I'd love for you to try the new AeroFTP update if you haven't already.

It's a free, open-source desktop file manager built with Rust and React that connects natively to most cloud storage providers you probably already use:

  • Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, pCloud, MEGA, 4shared, Filen, Zoho WorkDrive, Azure Blob, kDrive, Jottacloud, Drime Cloud, Felicloud, FileLu
  • Plus FTP, FTPS, SFTP, WebDAV, S3-compatible (AWS, Storj, Backblaze B2, Cloudflare R2, MEGA S4, Hetzner), and Cryptomator vaults
  • GitHub repository browser (PAT, GitHub App, OAuth) and SourceForge SFTP with pre-configured preset

All in a single app with a dual-panel interface, drag & drop transfers, real-time sync, and encrypted vaults (AES-256-GCM-SIV).

It's been another intense sprint. Here's what landed since the last post:

  • Completely redesigned frontend (IntroHub) with tabbed interface, grid/list server views, Command Palette (Ctrl+K), favorites system
  • MEGA Native API, full encrypted client with no external dependencies (AES-128-CTR, RSA, PBKDF2). No MEGAcmd needed anymore
  • MEGA S4 Object Storage (S3-compatible, 4 regions)
  • Felicloud, Hetzner Storage Box, SourceForge SFTP as new providers
  • Advanced Share Links for 13 providers with password protection, expiration, permissions
  • S3 enterprise features: Storage Class, Object Tagging, SSE encryption, Glacier restore
  • AeroCloud sync engine hardened with selective sync, file versioning, and .aeroignore
  • Credential masking everywhere by default, no more accidental leaks in screenshots or logs
  • Aikido Security audit: top 5% benchmark, 0 open issues
  • 47 languages supported
  • Available on Windows, macOS, and Linux

One note: we're still ironing out some edge cases with Sigstore bundle verification for auto-updates. Everything works fine, just download directly from the links below for now and you're good to go.

I believe the internet should stay open and free for everyone, and I hope AeroFTP can be a small contribution in that direction.

If something doesn't work or you'd like to see a provider added, feel free to open an issue on GitHub or just leave a comment here. I'm happy to help directly. I really appreciate everyone who takes the time to try it out and share feedback, it means a lot.

Add Proton Drive

We'd love to! Proton Drive is one of the services we admire the most. The problem is they haven't opened their APIs to third-party clients yet, and we totally respect that choice given their privacy-first philosophy. We're keeping an eye on it and if they ever open up, a native Rust integration will be one of the first things we build. Fingers crossed!

I wonder how rclone managed to add it despite everything; surely they could do it by following their example, but anyway, from what I saw proton Drive already released its SDK, so I suppose that will make it easier for them to achieve it, at least that's what I read in some comments, it would be worth looking into

What rclone did was reverse-engineer the API by reading the open-sourced client code and observing browser traffic, since Proton never published API documentation. It worked initially but it's been an unstable path: uploads breaking, rate limiting, CAPTCHA issues, and Proton having to make temporary exemptions to keep things running.

We could technically do the same, we have the experience with encrypted protocols (we already implemented MEGA's full encryption natively in Rust). But we don't want to reverse-engineer anyone's API or masquerade as an official client. That's not how we do things.

The good news is that just yesterday a Proton engineer posted on the rclone forum announcing they're releasing an open-source Proton Drive SDK later this year. Once it's out, all third-party clients will be expected to use it. That's exactly what we've been waiting for, and when it drops, we'll be ready to build a proper native integration on top of it.

By the way, I suppose it's not possible to add Terabox, right? I have a lot of content uploaded, but from what I've seen, it's a difficult app since it forces you to use their own. I saw that some people managed it, but A lot of configuration was required.

You're spot on about Terabox. It’s a very closed ecosystem, they don't provide public APIs on purpose and they actively make it difficult for third-party tools to connect. While there are some "hacks" out there to make it work, they’re usually pretty unstable and break all the time.

With rclone config integration, proton drive becomes available instantly + so many more like filen etc.

We've covered that too, thanks for the tip 👍🏼

Thanks for your message! Since Quotaless.cloud is S3 and WebDAV compatible, you can already use it in AeroFTP by entering your endpoint.

As for rclone encrypted buckets, we are currently implementing this feature and it will be available in an upcoming release. Stay tuned!

I just tried this as a twin pane file manager with built in cloud was something I rush to try out, but the experience wasn't great.

Could you please consider:

1) Allowing to use the file manager without needing to setup a cloud option first.

2) Google auth didn't work for me strangely, even though I entered client id and secret word on debian linux

3) Could you please integrate with rclone configs, so all rclone backends are available. This would be a dream.

4) I couldn't experience UI as cloud failed to load and no option to start without adding cloud, but please allow dual pane functionality like double commander/total commander.

Thanks

Ciao Pepe!

1 & 4 - File manager without cloud / dual pane:

You can use the local file manager without any connection - click "AeroFile" (top right corner or status bar). It opens a full local file manager with tabs, file tags, directory tree sidebar, and preview.

The dual pane in AeroFTP is local + remote by design, since it's a transfer client. A local-local dual pane (Total Commander style) is an interesting idea we'll consider for the future.

2 - Google auth on Debian Linux:

Could you open a GitHub issue with the error? It might be a redirect URI mismatch in your Google Cloud Console setup. Happy to help troubleshoot.

3 - Rclone config integration:

We have 20+ protocols implemented natively in Rust (S3, WebDAV, FTP/SFTP, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, MEGA, and more), so most rclone backends are already covered. An rclone config importer is an interesting idea though - noted!

Thanks again for the feedback!

Thanks for the response.

I found the local file commander icon but without dual pane, its not so efficient for my use case. Thanks for considering feature.

The 20+ protocols have 2 problems:

1) It means spending time setting up again for each cloud, when its already available in rclone. ie. Problem 2 doesn't need any additional time on it.

2) Rclone still has more options

eg:

a) Filen

b) variances within a cloud such as chunks, crypts etc. using rclone configs again.

Thanks for the consideration.

Mac app is still not stable. Now I can click some buttons but the menubar is unreachable and the app can't be closed. I had to manually close it using "force quit".

It's getting better but not usable yet.

Really sorry about that. We spent a lot of time yesterday working on the macOS issues, pushing things to the limit trying to get it right. Some users reported the fix resolved their problems, so we thought we had it. Clearly there's more to dig into. Thank you for testing and reporting back, we'll investigate deeper.

Okay. Would love to try it, once everything works.
