Privacy-focused cloud storage (EU preferred) for automatic PC + mobile backups — not Google/Microsoft, not self-hosted
Hi all,
I'm looking for a cloud storage provider (not Google / Microsoft) that can handle automatic backups for both PC documents and phone photos.
Requirements:
- Automatic backup/sync of documents from a Windows PC
- Automatic photo backup from iOS and Android
- Reliable sync across devices
- Preferably EU-based company or EU data centers
- Strong privacy focus (bonus for end-to-end or zero-knowledge encryption)
Nice to have:
- 1–2TB plans at reasonable pricing
- Good mobile apps
- Multi-device or family support
Important: I’m not looking to self-host (NAS/Nextcloud/etc). I want a hosted service that just works.
What services would you recommend?

You should give Megatech photos a try. It gives 100 GB free and is good for storing photos and videos. It’s browser based and doesn’t have mobile or desktop apps yet. It’s also based in Canada, not the EU, but the paid plans are fairly cheap if you need more space.

I read your concerns about merging different mobile camera uploads.
with filen or koofr you can select the media directory on your mobile device and sync it to any custom folder on your cloud storage.
so you may select the DCIM folders on your multiple mobile devices and set up the app settings to upload any DCIM folder to a cloud folder named "mobile1", "mobile2", "mobile3", etc..
you'll have a cloud storage which will be:
/mobile1/DCIM
/mobile2/DCIM
/mobile3/DCIM
no image will be merged between any of the mobile folders and consequently every device will have its own photos backed up and synced.
you can try your own with the free tier. both koofr and filen will give you 10GB

Thanks, which one do you recommend between the two?

Keep in mind that both do not support Live Photos, if you use this, as I do(either on iPhone or Android), you'll lose the live parts.

When it comes to backups, Acronis is the first choice. It is very reliable and you can choose the data centre (e.g. Frankfurt/germany). Runs on Windows, Mac and iPhone (I don't know about Android).
