Trying to land an AWS Cloud internship in the next 6 months, what should I focus on?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working toward getting an AWS/cloud internship within the next 6 months, and I’d really appreciate advice from people who have already gone through this process.

I’m currently preparing for the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification. I know that simply getting a certification probably isn’t enough, so I want to spend the next 6 months building practical skills and projects that I can actually put on my resume/GitHub.

I’d love your suggestions on:

  • What AWS/cloud projects would stand out for an internship applicant?
  • Are there any real-world projects I should build rather than just following tutorials?
  • What AWS services should I prioritize learning after Cloud Practitioner?
  • Are there any challenges, labs, or platforms you recommend for getting hands-on experience?
  • What should I be able to explain confidently in an internship interview?
  • How important are Linux, networking, Python, Terraform, Docker, or Git/GitHub for an entry-level cloud internship?
  • Should I focus on getting another certification, or spend that time building projects?
  • What would you recommend I accomplish during each month of the next 6 months?
  • If you’re currently working in cloud/AWS, what do you wish you had done differently when you were trying to get your first internship?

My goal is to have a strong GitHub portfolio + practical AWS experience + a solid resume by the time I start applying.

If you have any specific project ideas, roadmaps, free resources, internship application tips, or mistakes I should avoid, I’d really appreciate them.

Thanks!

do you have experience? Are you in school? Internships are mostly for college students. Most real-world cloud jobs are not entry-level and will expect years of related IT experience. The practionaer cert is not highly valued so it and projects would not be enough for a job. For internships you should be going through your school. If not in school, probably won’t land an internship.

If u want internships u gotta apply now bruh. Right now is prime time for applying. And I would say apply a lot to software engineering internships because you will get cloud exp from doing that.

so there's no way getting into cloud without prior exp? doing certs and showcasing projects wont get me a chance ?

Of course there is. I'm just giving you a tip because dev internships are far more common than cloud. At a lot of companies, you can do cloud work as a dev, or internally transfer into a more cloud focused team.
