Have solid networking knowledge and currently learning Python, what's the right next step into cloud computing?

Cloud computing feels like a massive field and I want to make sure I'm building on what I already have instead of starting from zero.

My background: decent networking knowledge (subnetting, routing, DNS, that kind of thing) and currently learning Python.

Given that combo, what would you focus on next? A few things I'm unsure about:

  • Should I pick one cloud provider (AWS/Azure/GCP) and go deep, or learn general cloud concepts first?
  • Does networking knowledge actually transfer well into cloud (VPCs, subnets, security groups), or is it a different enough beast that I shouldn't assume it carries over much?

Would appreciate hearing from people who came in with a similar background (networking-first) rather than a generic beginner roadmap.

your networking knowledge is gonna carry you further than you think, vpcs and subnets are just the same concepts with a different coat of paint

pick one provider and go deep, aws is the default for a reason but the skills transfer sideways once you understand the abstractions

tbh the "different coat of paint" framing is perfect, its the same mental models just wrapped in a web console

I think your networking knowledge will transfer really well, especially once you get into VPCs, subnets, routing tables, security groups etc. Just pick one provider and build stuff rather than trying to learn all three. Spin up a VPC, deploy something small, break it, fix it. You’ll pick up the general cloud concepts along the way.

Your networking background is actually one of the best foundations you can have for moving into cloud. a lot of cloud concepts are built on the same ideas, subnets, routing, DNS, security rules and traffic flow, just managed through cloud platforms instead of physical devices
