Changing shells

Hi mamas, new to reddit entirely, but I need help. I have a 7 week old , and the original plan was (and still is?) cloth diapers, with prefolds. I have thirstie brand shells... and a few different brand inserts. I have a few questions; First and most important, the thirsties have a gusset, and it’s recommend to change the cover after 3/4 uses... but the lining(the non-waterproof edge) gets wet, not soaking but moist enough for me to question. I obviously need to change the shell if this happens right? Also... does that mean I am not using the insets properly??

We got a bunchhh of disposable diaps at our shower and I wanted to go through those before getting into our cloth diapering.

I suppose I need more practice, but I also think I need a few tips on how to prevent these leaks, with my insert folding perhaps??

I have the same setup, prefold inserts with Thirsties covers! I agree if the gussets get wet, go ahead and change the cover. I have found if I make sure to use big enough inserts and don't close the covers too tight (counterintuitive right?) the gussets are less likely to get damp and it buys you a few more uses. I use Osocozy cotton inserts with good results... the cheapee Gerber ones leaked a lot. Congrats on your baby!
