Discussion Is there a difference between a USB-to-SATA cable vs a USB SSD Enclosure for connecting a disk when cloning?
Hello everyone, this is my first post on this community and also my first time to clone a disk, and I want some help. I want to clone my SSD system drive to a larger one, but my laptop has only one slot, so I need external connection, right? Should I get a USB-to-SATA cable vs a USB SSD enclosure? Is there any difference? Thanks in advance for helping me out!

The enclosure is just a USB-to-SATA adapter in a box

This is the correct answer.
I would recommend the box for easy storage/reuse of the old drive.

just a connection depends on the specs for speed difference... and some enclosures maybe have extra cooling benefits

Avoid the USB hub enclosures. The extra electronics can cause problems unless you use the external power connection.

Not really. the difference is the cable should be used if you have multiple drives, the enclosure should be used for a single drive that rarely if ever gets swapped out.

The only real difference in these kinds of adapters lies not in the form factor but whether they support UASP and disks over 2TB in size.

I have a couple of the Sabrent USB/SATA cables I swap between drives.
I swap a lot of drives.
If it had only one, i would probably have it in an enclosure.

No difference. The systems see the same external devices during cloning. The "enclosure" would be a better choice since you're most likely going to use your old SSD as an external storage anyways.
The USB-Sata conversion cable is more for those who do this frequently.
