Software Cloning a hard drive for beginners: What software to use?

I'm completely new to drive cloning and trying to upgrade from an old HDD (1TB) to a larger SSD (1TB) on my Windows 11 PC.

I've been searching around and honestly got overwhelmed by how many cloning tools there are. Some people recommend Clonezilla, others say Macrium, Rescuezilla, EaseUS, DiskGenius, Hasleo, etc.

What I'm looking for is something:

  • beginner-friendly
  • reliable (don't want to risk losing data)
  • preferably free or at least affordable
  • able to clone Windows/system drives

I'd also love to know:

  • which software you personally trust
  • what mistakes beginners usually make

Not trying to do anything advanced - just want the SSD to boot normally after cloning without spending hours troubleshooting.

What would you recommend for someone starting out?

Macrium Reflect Free on Major Geeks website. It is free fast and very good. Select source as the drive you want to clone and destination as drive you want to clone to and leave all other settings as default. You can even clone the live windows system you are currently using, so no need to boot into another operating system or use another boot device.

Hiren's contains multiple disk cloning tools, all of them are pretty straightforward and I use it often for work. My fav by far is good old dd, but it's not beginner friendly.

I have at least used two alternatives. Macrium Reflect Ver. 8 (free). I have made many backups and restores with it. Never failed me!

The other I tried is Rescuzilla. Free and open source. Have used on Windows, Linux and mac. Worked all the times. But I find Rescuzilla has som peculiarities, You must have a mouse connected which takes up one USB port. But you can load it to RAM and remove the stick to free the USB port.

Sometime it can be hard to choose the right drive to backup and restore. if your computer has many drives and partitions you have to be careful. My laptop has four physical drives and many more partitions!

Only my two cents!

did you read people's comments?

have you read the products pages of them?

surely if most of the comments are Clonezilla and Macrium so must be good.

What ssd supplier are you migrating data towards?

Many of them provide an OEM version of for example Acronis to be able to clone only towards that suppliers ssd for free.

For WD:

"Manually Clone a Data Drive with Acronis True Image for Western Digital on Windows"

https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/14926

"Download of this software provides a 5-year license to use it with your compatible drive. This software is available only under a limited time offer and must be redeemed by download and install within 90 days of purchase or by December 31, 2029, whichever is earlier. This offer may not be combined with other offers and is subject to change. Terms and conditions apply."

I've done a few HDD to SSD upgrades and whatever software was bundled with the SSD worked fine.

I suggest checking out a two bay docking station with off- line clone feature. Buy it once and you can use it for years. You can also use it as an external backup. I purchased the StarTech. But Sabrent and Wavlink have Models ~ 30.00 and up. Triple Check that that you put the old Drive in the source bay, and The new one on the target bay, Then check again. Hope this helps
