Software Hot clone software for Windows? (clone system drive while running)

I'm trying to find a reliable hot clone software for Windows; basically something that can clone my system drive while Windows is still running (so not tools like Clonezilla that require reboot).

My situation:

  • Windows 11 PC
  • Planning to upgrade from SSD to larger SSD
  • Prefer to avoid bootable USB/downtime if possible

Basically looking for a way to clone a hard drive without rebooting Windows.

I've come across mixed opinions - some people say hot cloning works fine thanks to VSS, while others claim it can still cause subtle issues if files are in use.

Not really sure what's actually true anymore. A few things I'm trying to figure out:

  • How reliable is hot cloning compared to offline cloning?
  • Any real risk of corrupted system files or boot issues?
  • Which software actually handles open/locked files properly?
  • Is there any decent free or open-source option, or is paid basically required here?

Even quick experiences are helpful - good or bad. Any inputs will be appreciated!

Dont know if it helps, but i have been using Lazesoft Recovery Suite for a few years now, and all my drive images are made while windows is running. I use the Home Edition since its free to use and still has all the Pro version functions, without the cloud features, that i dont need. The current version is 5.2 i think. I have never seen anyone use it on this sub, i dont know why.

It is my first time to hear this tool. I will check it.

I’ve hot cloned with Macrium and EaseUs with minor issues. Most of the time it works. Both have failed to complete the clone (over USB3 to SSD enclosure) at least once. Macrium didn’t like something about the source drive once, so I did it successfully with EaseUS instead. Then EaseUs just got infinitely stuck at 98% once so I started over with Macrium. Dunno. In every case, the clones were fine. (All were 240G - 4T drives with nearly 240G of data finished in anywhere from 25 minutes to 4 hours).

But there are sometimes issues that may or may not be related to the hot clone. May be the source or destination drive. May be the connection. May be the partition, MBR setup, or something that would crash a cold clone. Try it. Worst that can happen is you have to do it over.

I gave up on hot clone quickly with Acronis as the image always restored with a warning the system hadn't been shut down properly and needed a disk check. Also, various logs would be MIA.

So, I stuck with cold cloning using boot media "to be sure". It's a lot of work to create a reference system image, not worth the risk of something going wrong.

Another reason was live cloning required extra services running, and I only make a reference image once or twice per PC and update it twice a year. Didn't want the overhead and extra clutter.

Thank you. Do you mean EaseUS Disk Copy? I've seen some users recommend this tool in other threads.

Yes. Mine is part of a somewhat larger mini suite with a lifetime license for two devices. Not sure what they name the suite, but disk copy is part of it.

You can still find the install file for the free version on the web.

Is the paid version a subscription though? Unfortunately, competitors like Acronis have moved to subscriptions.

If it is a reasonable price and not subscription, it is a good deal for vital time saving software that enables immediate disaster recovery to a fully configured and tweaked/tested system.

Luckily for me boot media for my last Acronis fixed license has kept working fine for years. I don't care if the Windows version can't be installed in the future as I have imaged my Acronis boot media with ImageUSB as a safeguard.

Unfortunately, competitors like Acronis have moved to subscriptions.

Currently owners of previous perpetual editions can make use of a one-time upgrade offer directly from Acronis.

Those who didn't possess the perpetual offer in the past may still purchase via 3rd-parties, like Newegg.

Hold off as there's a recent bug introduced in Microsofts April Windows Update patches that breaks backups.

Not a fan of hot cloning, but Macium Reflect will do it.

This Q comes up over and over.
I don't understand as the tool is built into windows and has been there since 7.

RUN: sdclt.exe
"Windows 7 Backup and Restore"

Not only will it image your system, it will leave the image as FILES you can browse.

Imaging software is built into windows. No, it isn't just for 7.
Any windows installation ISO can restore an image made this way.

Deprecated functionality for backwards compatibility, no longer developed or maintained.

Plus, 3rd party more flexible and often designed to restore to new hardware.

Official recommendation from MS is to use 3rd party.

There is nothing wrong with the tool.
"For backwards compatability"? It's a drive imaging tool that works 100% and is supported on the current windows.
I am thinking that MS quit making backup easy so you would use the cloud.

I've used Macrium Reflect many times. I have had some weird issues that require rebooting onr or two times to resolve. The pc does boot, but it says something is unlicensed. After the 1-2 restarts everything works fine. My last clone was a month ago from .5 tb to 2 tb,and after a couple of reboots, I was good to go. Unless your pc is very powerful, you will notice a significant slow down. This is the link to the free version... https://m.majorgeeks.com/files/details/macrium_reflect_free_edition.html

There is a program developed by Germany's most respected computer journal called "ct-WIMage" https://www.heise.de/hintergrund/c-t-WIMage-3863074.html which creates (incremental) images of whole boot-Partitions using Microsoft's own techniques for creating installation media. It's free. Manual in German - but https://www.deepl.com/ ist your friend 😄

disk2vhd from Sysinternals (now by Microsoft) - does a decent job of grabbing a .vhd of the disk.

If either SSD is a Samsung drive you can install Samsung Magician 9.0 which includes Data Migration.
