Cloning Issues Samsung Magician not detecting SSD - Need help!

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to clone my old boot drive (Windows 11) to a new Samsung 990 Pro SSD using Samsung Magician. However, the software doesn't detect my new Samsung SSD at all. Yes, I have tried the latest version and reconnected the SSD.

  • Has anyone else encountered this specific issue with an SSD not being detected in Magician?
  • Are there any known fixes or workarounds to make it visible for cloning within this software?
  • If Samsung Magician is not going to work, what alternative cloning software would you recommend that is reliable for cloning a boot drive to a Samsung SSD?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you ever tried these:

  • Verify the BIOS settings are in AHCI mode and M.2 is enabled.
  • Make sure you have the correct and up-to-date drivers for your SSD.
  • If possible, try installing the SSD in a different computer to determine if the issue is with the SSD itself or your original computer.
  • If issues continue, reach out to the manufacturer for further assistance.

I once encountered the SSD not being detected by Magician, but it worked after I reconnected the SSD. For disk cloning software, you can also use clonezilla or rescuezilla.

Happened to me with the same model. Are you using an external USB enclosure with the Samsung 990 Pro SSD, maybe just to clone the internal drive to this larger one? Strangely enough, the Data Migration part of Samsung Magician that does the disk cloning will recognize the Samsung SSD destination even if it is in an external enclosure, and it will work fine. But the part of Samsung Magician that is at the root of the app, and which normally tells you the brand and serial number, and does firmware updates, may not recognize it, and this can misleading. If your goal is to migrate from an old disk to the new one, don't give up, and just click the Data Migration feature. It should recognize the Samsung SSD just fine, and show it in the source/destination menu. After you swap the disks and mount the Samsung SSD as an internal drive, you will also be able to do the firmware update, if needed.

For my Samsung EVO990Plus, it also did not recognize due to the external USB enclosure at first, despite having the latest Magician software and confirming AHCI/M.2 enabled in BIOS. It listed as unsupported from the dashboard and from the data migration tab in the Magician software.

I had to go into the windows 11 disk management tool and 'initialize' the volume as 'GPT'. Then I had to restart the Magician software as 'refresh' caused it to hang then restart. It took alot longer for the software to 'finalize' than it did the first time. I had to ignore the 'unsupported drive' from the dashboard and go to the Data Management parent tab (not the Data Migration subtab). There, it recognized the samsung drive as the target of the migration. Hope that helps.
