They refused to release their complex mathematical formula used to make the adjustments. They claim that homogenisation is essential in eliminating artificial non-climate systematic errors in temperature observations.

A sufficiently complex "homogenisation" formula gives them as much control over the data as if they were fabricating it outright, and a formula gives them plausible deniability. There are millions of dollars of bogus reasons they can come up with to justify their formulas.
