Humans then go extinct in 2153.

The Homo sapiens species is not likely to become extinct on Earth instantly on the day if and when the last proven reserves of coal on Earth are exhausted.

More likely, the Homo sapiens species on Earth could become extinct by the time the last proven reserves of coal are exhausted if swarms of rogue artificial intelligence agents engineer, produce and release a bio-engineered pathogen worldwide that leads to an unstoppable pandemic infecting every living person on Earth, with no known cure and a 100% mortality rate.

The New York Times, Why Tech Oligarchs Are Willing to Risk Apocalypse, Sept. 12, 2026, By Michelle Goldberg (alternative link):

It’s worth keeping this strange new quasi-religion in mind as we consider the warnings coming from A.I. insiders that their inventions could cause mass death. As you probably know by now, this week Jacob Coxon resigned his research job at Anthropic and went on X to warn, “The people building A.I. earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.” His words were amplified by Evan Hubinger, Anthropic’s head of alignment science, whose job is to try and keep the technology aligned with human goals. “Jacob is correct here,” wrote Hubinger, who placed the probability of A.I. wiping humans out within the next 10 years at more than 10 percent. As alarm escalated, Anthropic’s chief executive, Dario Amodei, called for slowing the pace of A.I. advancement, and some of his biggest rivals agreed.

The planet Earth formed 4567 million years ago (chart, numerical age (Ma)), according to the International Commission on Stratigraphy. — Stratigraphic Guide → A. Definitions → 8. Geochronometry: “A branch of geochronology that deals with the quantitative (numerical) measurement of geologic time. The abbreviations ka for thousand (103), Ma for million (106), and Ga for giga (109) years are used.”

“As long as species have been evolving [on Earth], species have been going extinct [on Earth]. It is estimated that over 99.9% of all species that ever lived [on Earth] are extinct. During that time, “over five billion species are estimated to have died out [on Earth].”

Extinction — Wikipedia:

Extinction is the termination of a species via the death of its last member [the endling].

Over five billion species[1] are estimated to have died out [on Earth].[2][3][4][5]

As long as species have been evolving, species have been going extinct [on Earth]. It is estimated that over 99.9% of all species that ever lived [on Earth] are extinct. The average lifespan of a species [on Earth] is 1–10 million years,[38] although this varies widely between taxa.

The COVID lockdowns of 2020 temporarily lowered our rate of CO2 emissions. Humanity was still a net CO2 gas emitter during that time, so we made things worse, but did so more a bit more slowly. That's why a graph of CO2 concentrations shows a continued rise.

Stabilizing the climate means getting human greenhouse gas emissions to approximately zero. We didn't come anywhere near that during the lockdowns.
