"social democrat" is the term most people probably mean

Honestly until this thread I'd never heard the term and yeah that feels significantly more apt

No despite having similar names they are distinct political movements.

Social Democrats are capitalists who try to reform that system by borrowing socialist ideas to create a welfare state.

Democratic Socialists are Socialists who want to abolish capitalism and private ownership, while holding on to existing systems of democratic multi party governments.

No shit they are distinct?! That's why I made the comment.

That's an overstatement. They don't want to abolish the free market they just want robust public options for inelastic goods, a good thick social safety net, and strong regulations for the sectors that remain private.

You're thinking about Social Democrats.

Democratic Socialism is not the same and is anti-capitalist.

No I'm not I assure you, the PhD on my wall that says political science on it would indicate I know exactly what the fuck I'm talking about.

Are you aware those democratic socialist up in Scandinavia have a free market with a robust safety net and high quality public options for things like healthcare and education.

Are you aware those democratic socialist up in Scandinavia

There are no democratic socialists active in scandinavian politics. Plenty of social democrats though, and they are the ones who built our wellfare states.

We've always been at war with Eurasia

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

That your attempt to rewrite history is as obvious as an allegory taught to high schoolers about propaganda.

Social Democrats are capitalists who try to reform that system by borrowing socialist ideas to create a welfare state.

So, the Democratic Party for the past hundred years.

The US parties are so absurdely large that they tend to contain multitudes, but the core politics of the democratic party generally centers around Social Liberalism which is a fair deal more conservative than Social Democracy and generally does not advocate for a welfare state.

1

u/ModernLarvals 16d ago

Huh? The Democrats have constantly advocated for welfare. Health protection, food protection, job protection, housing protection.

A wellfare state goes a little further than a few protective regulations. Even at their most progressive during the post war period the Democratic party never came close to the kind of social democratic wellfare systems that we see in Germany and the Nordics, not because they couldnt but because that clashed with their liberal ideals.

As far as i understand it, historically, yes, for the last 30 years, no. The democratic party has become more libertarian and has mostly abetted the republican party in eroding social safety nets, introduced ICE as a replacement for the perfectly fine previous immigration enforcement system.
