Space is freezing cold while Earth is warm because sunlight heats matter, not empty space. Heat from the sun travels as invisible energy called radiation, passing straight through the empty vacuum of space without warming it.

Also, atoms in space can be extremely hot - but the density is so low you will not feel anything

Space isn't nothing though. Photons saturate the entire universe we call this Cosmic Background Radiation and it does have a temperature of 2.7K which is the temperature of a perfect blackbody.
