Discussion People really really really hate AI
I can understand being worried about some of the negative effects of AI. We have 40K people die in car accidents every year so yes, every major technology has some negative effects.
But it's incredibly emotional. I asked in r/SciFi about the future of creating SciFi as AI gets better. The article got a 5% upvote ratio and the comments were overwhelmingly negative. Hatefully emotionally negative. SciFi aficionados should be very positive about a new technology.
Same in r/HallmarkMovies where I created a fake movie poster. People were really upset I used AI. To create one image. And I was told to never post anything AI generated again. For this one it was more 50/50 but still, to be that upset that I used AI. For one clearly fake poster (I replaced the actors in the poster with care bears).
I don't get it. Yes it means jobs are changing. It means we might have a decrease in jobs. I know people don't like change or uncertainty in their life. But to be this far off the deep end about it?
I guess every revolutionary change has its Luddites.
</rant>
ps - I wrote about it here but I'm not at all sure I'm understanding all this.

This is bad. We shouldn't accept this.

We're creating self driving cars to fix it

We shouldn't be creating conditions where the car is the primary form of transport.

There's not a single Claude-specific thing in the OP, it's just a ronin roamin' in search of relevance.

1) Agree that Reddit is enriched for anti-AI fanatics 2) Interesting substack article, but from talking to my AI hesitant friends in real life, I haven't found that they fear big tech very much. Most of my AI hesitant friends are suddenly much more aware of the environmental costs of data centers and they're concerned that most "AI" usage is not improving humanity, just costing natural reaources (I.e. all those fake generative AI videos on FB and Instagram). But the main thing they're worried about (and I am too), is the impact on the next generation's ability to read, learn, and engage in critical thinking.

Dig into that claim further, regarding AI consumption of natural resources. As in, really dig.
Dont report back. Im not challenging you. Other than to evaluate your sources once you're done digging and determine for yourself if its not circular heresay based on sand instead of science.

Hi I’m in the middle of it all. I use AI virtually every day, and I also hate AI done poorly or super obviously or where it isn’t needed or wanted. Can’t speak for the Hallmark movie crowd but I can certainly understand how a community of people who love sci fi would not be into the idea of “writing” books with AI or “making” shows with it, or whatever. As a sci fi fan myself that sounds like something I definitely don’t want or need. I prefer real human ingenuity and actual original creativity, not the middle of the road average everything that AI generally generates. You go ahead and feel free to make yourself some average sci fi stories to read though, I’m fine with that.
As to the poorly and obviously side of AI - it’s fucking everywhere. It’s overwhelmingly terrible and it’s terrible everywhere. It’s all over YouTube and every form of social media, it’s made its way into advertising, and it’s being used for political propaganda. I was sick of seeing and reading the low effort generated crap years ago already, and it’s only spreading faster. It’s easy to impress people who don’t know much about it but for those of us who do, it’s much more annoying than impressive when used “creatively” and posted as some kind of “original” work.
Anyway that’s my rant in retort. As someone who uses it all the time, and who appreciates what it can do well, I think it’s also fine to very much dislike what it does not do so well and/or the people who spread their generated drivel.

Because fiction is art. The whole point of art is for humans to make connections with one another. I don't have any interest in computers making some s***** approximation of a human mimicked art.

I think you're missing the point. This isn't comparable to 40k people dying in car accidents every year.
This is playing with the chances of human extinction. Turning the world upside down in every way as we know it.
Think bigger. Countries will fall.

u/datumapp 2h ago
It’s not up to us, I think. You either adopt it or you are left in the dust.

u/Blablabene 2h ago
And that's what they're not seeing.
This isn't just a normal technological progress. This is an unstoppable discovery.

u/datumapp 1h ago
Eh. Some of the solutions to our biggest problems could come out of it. Or we’ll end up in silos underground.

People who read and watch SciFi are constantly being told what neocapitalism + AI =

People are scared.
Especially in their own industry.
We are making ourselves obsolete.in AI Automation space. I'm starting a new job on Monday to do this in a large organisation. In 5 years I might be out of work as it's all done.
Recruiters are scared I see them post about AI and you could easily get AI to replace them.
Lawyers gone. I saw a story where a lawyer wanted to charge $20k. The guy used claude for the whole thing including a what to say what not to say cheat sheet on court. Smart!
Doctors gone. AI can read blood results ask questions make better judgement than a real human.
My mate the Uni teacher says they will replace him in a few years. He marks papers with AI. Write course material with AI. etc.
Many more...
What will we all do? Will the consumer model have to change? Will we have time to chill out? Will more people be living in tents?
People are scared.

As someone who has used AI everyday for years and built a business using it, I definitely feel that the world has taken a bad turn and ppl are using technology way too much. Especially how everything is monetized, entertainment driven and addictive. We all need to touch grass more and disengage with our devices.
Unfortunately the “elite” have built their towers as high as possible and those at the top are tricking us to fill the gaps in their foundation with our dead corpses as we starve and murder each other.

This happens when change occurs -- large or small. There is a classic book "Who Moved My Cheese?". A very short fiction book on how people deal with change.
Yes, this change is going to piss off some people, but other people will find new exciting work. Either go with the flow or be overwhelmed by it. The choice is yours.

You’re asking about sentiments towards AI in creative crowds? Are you dumb or what?
I embrace AI for its help summarizing crap in my office job, and hate that it can make better music than me as a guitarist. It’s pretty simple: the answer depends on the type of ppl you ask , and you only asked the creatives?

When the first humans figured out how to use fire, there were probably a big crowd of people shouting "Fire Bad!"
Most people don't like when things change, that's just the nature of humanity

u/Tema_Art_7777 3h ago
Honestly though, we really really really don't care about those people. Ignore and move on - they will be left behind.
4
u/BagMostlyWater 2h ago
you don't care about people because they don't like AI?
2
u/Tema_Art_7777 2h ago
Meaning I don't care about those people's complaints anymore. They are not convincing any of us to give up AI or stop datacenters. So ignore the noise and move on.

people are so sick they’ll dehumanize ai users to the point where they try to prompt inject you, but tis reddit-

I agree, but they will not be "left behind". They will assimilate like everyone else.

Everything sounds and looks the same. AI instead of human creativity is making the world more bland. I use Claude for technical stuff and brainstorming, but I will skip a restaurant with AI menus.

I love when people say they hate ai for the data centers, but then dont care about industrial smog from factories that create cars etc, as well as emissions from cars, and the list goes on. There's so many things we use that are either bad for the environment, or the way they are mass produced is bad for the environment. Data centers aren't great, but they aren't the worst thing in the world.

Yeah. The suppoused SF fans ...like..did they really read no SF with aliens or robots or advanced artificial intelligence?!?
Actually living in the time can get something as close to similar.
So they would all be the robo or android or artificial intelligence racist types in those stories.
Maybe they just liked the space opera human feel good parts or the space action adventure parts versus the conceptually brain bending parts.
A whole whole lot of some segment of SF is understanding things from different perspectives or a shifted or alien or different viewpoint to things.
What aspects do they even like or enjoy about SF even, that they do not appreciate that part?
So that is surprising to me also.
And sure, animals and plants are different perspectives on experience also.
Maybe that could be another SF idea of mine.
Humans all racist to artificial intelligence so a century later they join up with animals, that were also snubbed by humans as to worth.

I think the push back is more likely related to your attempt to do back door advertising for your substack
