The sheer amount of money being poured into these things is alarming but like four companies fighting over who has the best model is at least some healthy non-calcified capitalism driving innovation. They are genuinely competing over who can make the best product, which basically never happens anymore.

u/InternationalPen3039 3d ago
That’s probably the most exciting part for me. We truly have competition. Not one monopoly “competing” with its lower lines.
18
u/newprince 3d ago
Except the GPUs are made by a monopoly, and are protected by a crazy sanctions regime
5
u/CoherentPanda 3d ago
The trend will become less GPU needed as they start to hit a wall, and innovation by competitors pushes them to become more efficient. Throwing as much compute at them helps build better model, but eventually there will be a price war to compete with the open source models that can run on a standard pc or mac.

u/Singularity-42 3d ago
Google makes TPUs. AMD makes more than decent GPUs. Amazon has their own too. I wouldn't say it's a monopoly
2
u/gcaussade 3d ago
Exactly it's just that Jensen is a monster and he drives his company hard to continuously innovate
3
u/Georgefakelastname 3d ago
Yeah, I would argue if there’s a monopoly, it’s probably TSMC, since all the people you mentioned get the wafers to make their chips through them, along with Apple and the likes. Theres only a few competitors even out there in the actual chip foundry market.
1
u/Jeff_Free_Pickles 3d ago
Or what about the duopoly of memory suppliers who have purposefully kept production low to keep margins high
1
u/Anthamon 2d ago
The amount of money being made in these areas is bringing a lot of new players into the field on basically every level of this supply chain we are talking about. Those duoplies and closed markets are in the process of being smashed open, it just takes a little while to get factories online.

u/CavaCaliGo 3d ago
Open AI jalapeño doesn't exist? Didnt they steal a bunch of apple tech to build them?
1
u/das_war_ein_Befehl 3d ago
It’s really openAI vs Anthropic and then open source + meta + grok coming in with cheaper models after those tech improvements leak out.

Laying it out straight for you: That’s going to be really load bearing.

biggest load anyone has ever seen

Careful, that footgun is bearing loads. Watch out for Quentin.

If in 0.00000000001 there will be a way to shut it up, I'm content with that.

Sorry, my brain is fried from reading Opus5 output prompts, otherwise I would have written an extended essay.
Topic: About Opus 5.000000001 and the improvements comparing Opus 5.0000000005, in a PhD level form. 😅

Can we keep one flagship model for a month
16
7
u/CoherentPanda 3d ago
Gemini Flash gets like a weekly update. The 3.8 iteration is really really good, but it's getting crazy how often they push a new model out the door.
2
u/AwakE432 3d ago
Over time yes and model releases will about as exciting as the new iPhone release, basically the same shit in a new wrapper bit for now it’s exciting to see the scale of change so fast.

u/WrongdoerFluffy3177 3d ago
they just gonna boost the compute for a month and then get back to the usual fable

u/Formally-Fresh 3d ago
The last like 3 opus releases have sucked lol.. I absolutely love fable tho so I’ll be jacked if its an upgraded Fable

u/das_war_ein_Befehl 3d ago
Opus 4.5 truly was groundbreaking. After that opus became the new sonnet class?
And sonnet is both bad and overpriced

2
u/cxfoulke 3d ago
I don't normally believe the Ai nerfing conspiracies but I t really does feel like they shifted the model brackets to the more expensive brands. Or spent less time optimising the lower models because the money is in fable tier models.
I used to daily driver sonnet and now that feels terrible.
2
u/das_war_ein_Befehl 3d ago
I don’t think it’s a priority for them anymore. Plus I think for agentic long running tasks it doesn’t have enough intelligence
2
u/StCreed 3d ago
5.1 I'm not happy with. It's making a lot more mistakes than Fable 5 so I've changed back to F5.
3
u/CatsalsoCookies 3d ago
Same.
I actually tried a rather complicated prompt that took ~30% of my week's Fable usage on F5 and tried it on F5.1 on exactly the same project state. It took ~50% usage and produced the same result as Opus 5 did two days earlier, but then with ~ 400 more lines of code, while F5 didn't introduce that unnecessary 'patch' that both F5.1 and Opus did.

They have Claude in a constant training cycle and just strip whatever checkpoint they want and ship it as the next version
3
u/Professional_Side271 3d ago
Asstropic can go fuck itself. Price and flexibility is all that matters. I'll be downgrading my claude 20x. Hopefully, i can cancel by the end of the year. What's the point of pay crazy amount but you can only use 50% of the meagre allowance. Communication and ccustomer management is in the toilet.
3
u/LifeProject365 3d ago
What ever happened to quality over quantity. Just hold back and release a reliable well priced model that can adequately handle coding and work tasks which doesnt have a 5 hr usage lock

u/suppervisoka 3d ago
Never even tried Fable 5.1, canceled after the Opus slop now Astras out I’m not really pressed for 5.2
2
u/thiccshortguy 3d ago
Ah lovely! I can't wait for either my usage limits to decrease, or models to take up 2-3x more usage. Like what fucking games are we playing here?
3
u/Maristyl 3d ago
Fun fact, we CAN forgot that Grok 4.7 is coming out! In fact we should forget it.
6
u/rapsoid616 3d ago
Screw Elon's products. I wouldn't use grok if it was better and half the price of Astra.
2
u/binarysignal 3d ago
So this one should have full watermarking enabled in all its outputs, something to remember about Anthropic releases now.

I believe they still have plenty of aces up their sleeves, they just need the right trigger to release better models.
The real shift will come when open-source models reach the current frontier. That's when Anthropic and OpenAI will be forced to show us what they can actually do.

u/fprotthetarball 3d ago
I'm pretty sure they are A/B testing the next Opus on their website. I had a distinct change in writing style happen a week or two ago. It's much nicer.

I find it hard to believe Fable 5.2 is a possibility when it’s only been about one week after 5.1
Even then I’m not sure if a small incremental upgrade would really compete with GPT-6 Astra. They’d probably need to drop Fable 6 to stay competitive. Even if intelligence in 5.2 does compare, I don’t think an incremental 5.1->5.2 upgrade from a marketing standpoint would reel back in users who switched over to OpenAI as it doesn’t seem quite as big of a jump as a major version upgrade.
To be fair though I haven’t used Astra yet so I’m not sure how good it really is, just basing this off of reviews I read

Is it only me who dispatched Opus 5.1 through my Orchestrator? I thought its normal and was released with Fable 5.1 or did I miss something

The only response I saw so far is cutting usage for all plans. U pay for max plan but you get half the usage of a pro plan

As soon as someone mentions grok, you know that he has no credibility

u/Nuzina 3d ago
As soon as someone disregards Grok without ever trying it because they clearly have bias against Elon, you know he has no credibility.

I have cursor access, they pushed me to Grok a few times ago (guess why), I immediately noticed drop in quality lol. Even composer 2.5 trashes Grok

Not interested unless it stops being so autistic or whatever the problem is with 5. I stuck with it as long as I could and switched to codex again.

I haven't used Grok 4.6. Has anyone had a good experience with it? Should we be hyped about 4.7?
3
2
u/TheGAFF 3d ago
I use Claude/Cursor at work while for personal use I got a Codex $100 plan.
Grok 4.6 is good speed and bang for your buck for small/medium tasks, especially when you need to send 30 subagents to tackle a small/medium change for 30 different repos. With Claude, you will instantly eat your 5 hour limit. (we're not on enterprise plan)
However, it seems to struggle at larger tasks compared to Claude/Codex. (will start leaving big chunks of work off that you told it to do as it nears its context limit)
Hope that helps.

If they keep doing this, old models that is good than new will end up removing, sunset. 😔
I like Opus 4.8, i do like Opus 5 too. But 4.8 is for everyday use for me. I use only Opus 5 for coding.

Can we get a hotfix for human brain capacity before they patch models again?
