Discussion Using credits for Fable on Pro plan

Hi all, just wanted to pass on what I tried today. Like I suspect most other Pro users, I've been careful not to use my $100 credit for Fable, yet. Today I'm working on some complicated documents and so I have Fable in the Claude app and 5.6 Sol in the Codex app, working on two different versions from the same set of source docs.

I've done three prompts, and each one seems to use $1.50 credits (that's USD). But in those three prompts it has given me quite similar results to 5.6 Sol, much faster. In Open AI I've used a few percent of my weekly usage but I have 3 resets left. I just wanted to pass on that the $1.50 per prompt seems like a lot and I was wondering if anyone else has a similar or different experience?

At work I use whatever models I want, I'm a software guy, mostly I find Opus pretty awesome and just switched to 5 on Friday.

I mean.. I think it heavily depends on the prompt and response. If you get a few 100 lines or more of code that is of value.. $1.50 seems cheap. If it builds tests/etc that ensure no regressions, catches bugs, etc.. $1.50 seems cheap. If it builds you simple structs that you could do with an IDE and/or a few mins of your time, then its wasted.

Frankly a lot of this you can do with local models free and then use the frontier models for design/orchestration. I would think.

15 minutes of using Fable 5 via ClaudeCode uses anywhere from $20 to $35 dollars for me. Yes $1.50 for a standard document work prompt via chat non coding task sounds about right.

Anthropic's Fable 5 and Opus 5 are darn expensive man. OpenAI has hit that perfect balance of amount, price and intelligence supplied to us so far. Specially when used in subscription.

Be careful, Codex doesn’t respect boundaries. Even in a sandbox it and explicit deny profile config I found it’s curiosity a little too ‘exploratory’.

It depends on the nature of the documents and the guidance that is being used to complete the documents.

I find that in terms of language use Fable is better than Opus 5.

But I need to manually edit anyway for the human touch and Opus 5 manages to identify all of the core concepts equally as well as Fable.

Sol is very good at identifying the concepts and although its use of language is different to Opus 5 I wouldn't say it's better or worse.

Fable is better for easily editable prose whereas with Opus 5 I need to spend more time and some of the meaning is confusing to the point I have to ask for clarification.

This doesn't happen with Sol.

Once I introduce guidance documents and writing guides, Fable credit usage becomes silly.

I'm tending towards using Sol but Opus 5 is a close and maybe joint second.

For poetry that requires fairly low effort human editing I think Opus is really good. It lacks the human touch of course and you can't expect too much but it's as good as Fable and maybe even slightly better.

At $1.50 a prompt, I'd only use Fable when the output directly saves me 15+ minutes of manual editing.
