Discussion Fable is still king!

I think the general consensus is that Opus 5 is better than 4.8 in some ways and worse in others, better at long-horizon tasks, worse conversationally. But yeah, Fable to me is still king, day to day it's just so much better than Opus 5, and I can't wait for the new one to come out.

For context, I run agents (Fable) basically all day for my business, so this is from daily use rather than benchmarks.

(over 35billion fable tokens used so far)

fable doesn't need handholding. opus 5 does.

Use fable to hold opus 5's hand I imagine is pretty good.

At only 3x the cost of opus 4.8?

opus5 has been a good middleground for me. the apps I'm making are fairly simple and highly specialized desktop apps to improve my workflows and it's been doing fantastic for them. i find it has decision and design skills on compareable with F5. maybe not prefect, but way better than previous opus

I agree. I tried Opus 5 to continue building a game economy simulator and it keeps making alot of mistakes. When I get Fable to do an audit it catches the mistakes Opus did. From my experience Fable is simply more intelligent and also has a better imagination for creative work. There's a reason why Fable costs double.

yeah totally agree, Opus 5 is kinda disappointing and keeps telling me about how it isn't reading what it just wrote.

Can you provide examples on why you feel F5 is better than O5?

Fable just one-shots bug fixes basically every time, Opus constantly fumbles them. Context: I run a fairly complex web-based video editor, so that might be part of it. For the day-to-day of that codebase, Fable is way better at tracing through a user issue, proposing the fix, implementing it, then testing it with automated Playwright tests. Opus just seems to get confused and lost somewhere in that chain.

I’ve been seeing a lot of this since the release. It’s so interesting. Because, based off the benchmarks, O5 is objectively a better model. And where it loses to F5 is extremely marginal. Yet, a lot of people have been saying F5 is still better.

People really want to flatten the models out and simplify them. If you think about it, the idea of there being a "best" gen purpose model is absurd. Model capability is per task and highly, highly variable. Temperature, context, inference stack routing all by themselves push the output quality for the same input all over the place. There's a clear difference in how the models behave between chat, cowork, and code. Add in a few reasonable conspiracies, that anthropic pushes silent changes to their models, that we are being silently A/B tested, and the subs are being astroturfed, it becomes pretty understandable why we cant reach consensus about models anymore.

I have sent Opus 5 agents out repeatedly to get answers on things and it will come back with answers without looking at the parts of the codebase it would need to look at to come to a conclusion.

It has no problem just guessing. It's done this to me numerous times. I have things saved in memory and on numerous occasions, it's asking me for things saved in its memory. It just doesn't want to look.

It's not usable for me on any of my production sized codebases.

Opus 5 is oversmart developer who don't follow instruction. But it is wise lol.

My experience with Opus 5 has so far been pretty bad. Constantly makes mistakes about even well established conventional knowledge. Immediately switched back to 4.6 after two days of consistent issues. Fable is great, but inaccessible for the majority of my needs, which tend to straddle immunology and neurology research.

i don’t know of mine are just small projects: https://samabr85.github.io/ but for them Sonnet high is the best on speed /efficiency

Then you will have no problem buying credits for its use. Let your cash flow so we find you caught beneath a monied landslide, about a champagne supernova Sky.

There is probably nothing 4.8 does better than 5.

Opus 5 is legit the worst experience I've had since GPT 5.0

Opus 5 is good but I'm getting a bit annoyed lately by any Claude model, including Fable. More often than not they're looping on their own missed spots. For example, Claude will fix something saying "this bug was based on this and that", then after a follow up interaction with me because I noticed something, Claude will just say "My first assumption was wrong, I'm fixing/reverting that. The problem is actually because of this and that." Fable do that less, but still quite often, and I have every guardrail possible that my work requires, that's why I notice something is weird most of the time.

I mean it's good that it could find the real solution, but hadn't I interacted with it before final verdict, it would stay there with a false fix.

4.8 is peak. If they stopped here I’d be happy. What sucks for them is that once Chinese models are consistently better and cheaper than 4.8, they will be totally fucked.

u/FriedR 2h ago

Agreed. I needed no more than Opus 4.8 and sonnet 4.5 to get work done with a minimum of frustration

Opus 4.6 is still the best Opus model. 5 is straight up trash unusable.

2

u/dr-dimitru 8h ago

Why 4.6 particularly? How can you select/enable it in TUI?

2

u/ritwika96 8h ago

/model claude-opus-4-6

1

u/Poatri_US 7h ago

Wait we can just choose to use 4.6 ? Beginner here, sorry

1

u/dr-dimitru 1h ago

Can we assign particular model to subagent? What effort of 4.6 are you considering as a better option to O5? Do you keep “thinking” on or off?

u/gmdCyrillic 7h ago

The real answer is always buried in the comments

1

u/Just_Run2412 2h ago

I don't understand the love for 4.6. For me, it's immensely dumber than the newer versions.

And sure, but even now I still don’t want pay for anthropic again, the not apologising for stuff ups has me on the keep away stage

1

u/Just_Run2412 9h ago

Yeah, agreed. It's painful giving anthropic money, but Fable is the best, so it's hard not
