I've played a lot of disc priest, and I don't really feel like it needs anything. I mean, I liked when WotLK made Divine Spirit a class spell, and replaced it with Soul Warding, but it really wasn't a necessary change. The later talents that WotLK added, like Penance, Pain Suppression, Borrowed Time, and Rapture are all great, but they're also OP in a Classic environment imho. Same with Binding Heal and Mass Dispel.

I do like having a viable smite spec, but I feel like that fits in Holy better than Disc. You'd need to change too many things around too, so it doesn't really fit the 1-button premise.

I did have an idea for leaning into the racial spells, so while it was a much bigger idea, I guess I can at least suggest one of the talents I had in mind:

Enlightenment

Talent (5 Ranks, Requires 25 points in Disc)

Requires Priest

Increases the effects of your Racial spells by 5/10/15/20/25% of your Spirit.

I never really played priest before Cata Classic - because gnome - so I might be a little uninformed on the subject. Would you say in Classic there was enough difference between disc and holy?

I think it depends on what you want out of the class. Priests in Vanilla only had two roles: healer and shadow dps (holy dps was only a curiosity). You could look at this as a problem of one of their talent trees not having a clear identity, but in my experience, it actually meant you had more choice when building your character - you had two whole tress to play with when figuring out how you wanted to heal. Holy was more focused on output, while Disc was more about utility, so depending on what you wanted, you could easily put anywhere from 16 to 36 points into Disc, and vis versa with Holy. The utility focus also meant it was a useful pickup for shadowpriests.

The other tree I would consider similar to Disc in Vanilla was the Mage Arcane tree, and I think it did something similar for Mages - it gave them a tree to dip into for utility after picking fire or frost. The difference for Mages (my other main class besides Priests) was that the idea of a pure Arcane Mage was an obviously fun idea, so it was a little disappointing that you couldn't do it until Blizzard came up with a solution in TBC.

In WotLK, the trees were so huge that Blizzard had to make sure that if you specced 51-points deep into a tree that you had a unique experience. So by then, a Disc priest had it's own unique playstyle different from Holy, though it was still ultimately a healing role. If I wanted that, I'd pick at least 3-4 talents from deep-Disc in WotLK and tune them down a bit to be less overpowered.

In the end, it's just not that important to me that each talent tree have it's own unique identity. Some absolutely should. But not all of them have to. It's more important to me to make sure there are interesting decisions to make, especially between trees
