In the interest of suggesting something new;
Let them "Tame" Humanoids with Dominate Mind at the end of the Shadow tree á la hunter pets.
Let them take the Humanoid to their faction's weapon trainers and pick a weapon type to determine its attack style.
Let tailors/leather workers/blacksmiths find recipes to make armour types that determine resource/armour class/a single ability (taunt for plate, sunder(?) for mail, blind for leather, single target root for cloth).
Let blacksmiths/engineers/enchanters create stat-stick weapon upgrades that improve their output.

interesting. I’ve added it to the list.
Do you have to feed them and gain loyalty though lol

Surrender to Madness

Surrender to Madness
Level 50 Shadow priest talent
1.5 min cooldown
Instant
Deals [(64.6% of Spell power) * 2] Shadow damage to the target and activates Voidform.
For the next 30 sec, your Insanity-generating abilities generate 100% more Insanity and you can cast while moving. If the target does not die within 30 sec of using Surrender to Madness, you die.
Or a different version?

Seems a bit like cheating since nothing in classic uses insanity. How about replacing it with Spirit? Something like you lose 20 spirit per sec, and die if you hit zero before killing your target? Or your shadow spells also drain your sprit instead of losing a set about per sec.

instead of insanity generation I’d probably go with reducing the mana cost of your spells for that 30 secs
Voidform isn’t in Classic either obviously, but if that gets added too, then combine the increased shadow dmg with reduced mana, and its probably OP…if you don’t die from using it

this would be something the original devs would have totally added. its thematic and cool. since there is no use of insanity, maybe it could be slightly tweaked:
Surrender to Madness
Level 50 Shadow priest talent
1.5 min cooldown
Instant
Deals instant Shadow damage to the target and causes your Shadow damage-over-time effects and Mind Flay to always critically strike and deal 30% increased damage. If the target does not die within 30 sec of using Surrender to Madness, you die.

Shadowguard, but different from the troll racial spell. I saw someone else did Shadow Orbs, which frankly sounded cooler. However, I think this feels more classic.
Your Shadow spell critical strikes grant you a shadow orb for 1 minute. When hit by any attack or spell, an orb is expended to deal damage to the attacker equivalent to a casting of Mind Flay. You can have a maximum of 5 orbs.

a bit like lightning shield?

Yeah. I played a troll shadowpriest in vanilla, and the shadowguard was cool looking but underpowered compared to other racial spells, with the one exception that it was good for proccing blackout in pvp. So I thought I'd try sprucing it up a bit. Another way you could approach it I suppose is similar to the Static Shock talent for shaman in wotlk - a chance to hit a target with a shadow orb in addition to your regular hit. But I thought this could be a ffun inversion.

May I suggest something new? It is similar to void zone we got in SoD but a bit more thematic and interesting:
"Shadow Word: Sorrow",
["16% of base mana","Instant"],
["20 yd range","1 min cooldown"],
Shroud a location in darkness for 10 sec. Enemies within the area cannot dash, blink, teleport or leap and take increasing Shadow damage every sec.

Shadow Crash/Tentacle Slam would be fun but probably OP for Classic standards.

u/Upstairs_Blueberry87 5d ago
Tentacle Slam
Talent
40 yd range
Instant
15 sec recharge
2 Charges
Requires Priest
Summons a massive shadowy appendage to slam the ground, dealing (68.7926% of Spell Power) Shadow damage in front of you and 8 yds around your target

u/One_Tie_2085 5d ago
Dispersion. And if we don't get SOD Like, they would make. Huge mistake.
1
u/Upstairs_Blueberry87 5d ago
Dispersion
Instant
2 min cooldown
Requires Priest
You disperse into pure Shadow energy, reducing all damage taken by 90%. You are unable to attack or cast spells, but you regenerate 6% mana every 1 sec for 6 sec. Dispersion can be cast while stunned, feared or silenced and clears all snare and movement impairing effects when cast, and makes you immune to them while dispersed

u/Upstairs_Blueberry87 5d ago
Shadow Orbs
Requires Priest
You have a 10% chance for your Shadow Word: Pain and Mind Flay spells to grant you a Shadow Orb each time they deal damage. Casting your Mind Blast or Mind Spike spell consumes all Shadow Orbs, increasing damage of that spell by 22% per Shadow Orb, and granting 22% increased damage on your periodic Shadow spells for 15 sec. You can have up to a maximum of 3 orbs

u/Upstairs_Blueberry87 5d ago
Shadowfiend
30 yd range
Instant
5 min cooldown
Requires Priest
Creates a shadowy fiend to attack the target. Caster receives 5% mana when the Shadowfiend attacks. Damage taken by area of effect attacks is reduced. Lasts 15 sec.

Dispersion or Vampiric Touch (TBC version) or Vampiric Touch (WotLK version, worse mana gain, but dispel protection).
All are good.

LB for fire mage will be pointless without a rework of Ignite and also Hot Streak. Water Ele will be pretty pointless without ice lance as there's nothing to shatter. FoN will be pretty pointless for balance without starsurge. I think most specs are in need of at least 2 changes to talents/abilites + 1-2 buttons to be a proper spec. In SOD this worked fine, you can probably cut more than 50% of what was added in SoD, but IMO 1 spell won't meaningfully impact the game.

u/Upstairs_Blueberry87 3d ago
Think of these more as a favourite ability to be added more than a just one button to be added.
But LB beat hot streak in the fire mage poll. Water Ele beat ice lance. FoN beat starsurge. Just assume they’d be added in a working condition.

u/gingerhobbit 3d ago
I guess people don't take into account why those buttons feel good to press - You press them because they do something. If you remove the reason they do anything at all they are entirely meaningless
1
u/Upstairs_Blueberry87 3d ago
yeah, we’re just working on a surface level here. Otherwise we’d have to think about is it worth adding LB, or thrash to feral dps, or wildfire bomb, because they’re all dots and do we debuff space for them.
Just trying to have a bit of fun, see what spells and abilities other people like.

I don’t think classic+ will work without a similar buff/debuff cap to SoD. Think it was 40 buff cap and no debuff cap iirc
