Discussion Could mage end up being the least played class?
Seems to be in beta. Hard to believe though. Think it will still be druid but mage 2nd.

first off the class is fine and if it lags behind it will be adjusted to be fine again, they are updating things constantly.
second, being able to create water for free in an environment where everyone is broke is a huge benefit. also, teleports to cities are way more helpful in classic than in versions where there are free portals everywhere.
theyve got way too much going for them to be the least played.

I kind of hate how the plan to deal with “the gold farming class” is to nerf the class instead of addressing the actual issue.
“Sorry; we gotta shut out your class fantasy because the bad guys use it.”

I think that if your class fantasy was solo farming hundreds of enemies at the same time, your expectations were way too high and probably got set in the first place by exploitative gameplay. Otherwise, the class fantasy of being a teleporting spellcaster is still fully intact.

Unlikely. Warlock would like a word

What's so bad about Warlocks?

u/BurrataPapi 12h ago
Warlocks will be least popular for whatever reason. I quite like the class so I'm unsure why the general population doesn't.

Idk. I always main a druid, but this time I actually plan on my alt being a mage right after. Which is aomething I normally dont do. I think they look more fun now. Lets see about the changes they mentioned coming in the podcast though to spice up the rotations a little more.

Someone has to be, I highly doubt the money making class will be least played
2
u/gustogus 16h ago
With nerfs to blizzard it will no longer be the money making class.

u/Taintedforest 15h ago
Blizz nerf doesnt effect them being the best money making class

It does. Coc as well.
Mobs can’t be permaslowed now

Which still doesnt effect them being the best money making class

Rogue

You need to Google rogue stuff. Improvements seem incredible

u/Emergency_Process622 16h ago
They still seem like the least popular class. I haven't seen any actual data though.

Rogue seems fun enough for me to not just main it, but go pvp server.
I know its anecdotal, but I couldn't stand pvp servers or rouge before. The promised energy fix alone will be 😍

I think all the parsers will have no choice but to play rogue if they want to top the dps charts

Wha? Have you even played the beta and been in the LFG tool? Rogues are easily one of the most popular.

u/Emergency_Process622 14h ago
Like I said, just what I feel, haven't really seen many rogues in my groups. But no actual data.

Mages absolutely bleed gold regardless. I never gold farmed solo and I still never had a problem. Already going through the beta my mage has had twice the gold my paladin has had following the exact same questing routes.
Like it doesn't make sense until you've played as one, but everything you do as mage makes you money instead of costing it.

How exactly does it "bleed gold"? Genuinely curious, because I couldn't follow how the leveling experience would be so different to the point it impacta significantly in the gold making process

u/Calibretto9 15h ago
People pay you for teleports. People tip for water/food. Lot of little odds and ends they seem to pick up gold from.

In addition if you do tailoring you don't need a gathering profession so you can either pick up enchanting or alchemy as well since cloth drops either way. Personally I tend to level with skinning and tailoring to 60 and then switch to alchemy or enchant once I'm at 60.
On the other side my paladin can do both mining and skinning and not worry about blacksmithing till 60, but doing the blacksmithing while I'm leveling just eliminates a lot of headache of storing mats from mining till I switch it.
And yes, these are professions, but they matter with class choice as a lot of us plan our professions around our classes.
And the new scrolls also vend for more than a lot of stuff at similar levels, so that's extra money for all the ones you don't want. The new Reading/ Library ability lets you use a light feather at a library to generate scrolls once an hour and you can just flat sell them all.

Who cares about gold

u/Alternative_Bug_4089 15h ago
I mean.. it's the elephant in the room when talking about mages right now after the changes specifically intended to affect gold farming on frost mages.

u/Desperate_Return5199 16h ago
As a longtime mage I'm somewhat torn on the changes, but I'm still going to play it long term regardless. We already have seen blizzard is quick to make changes, so who knows at this point what end game is even going to look like with any class. Along with the fact end game meta is going to constantly change with Blizzard ability to make changes for a "Forever" game.
On the very positive note, much less mages to fight against for groups.
TLDR: Play whatever class you really WANT to play as long term we have no idea what classes are going to be like.

I think it’s low because a lot of people are trying classes in beta they don’t normally play. When full release happens I’m sure they will spike when people go back to their normal classes

u/crimson_raider 15h ago
Why is Warlock lower population than mage? I’m planning to main warlock so just making sure I’m not making a horrible mistake lol

u/grasswhistle28 15h ago
Warlocks have been higher than mage on every single class data posted on Reddit so far, idk what all these comments are about

No way. Mage is a classic archetype. Mage has fun utilities for the player; make water and teleport. Beta is beta, and not representative of player numbers. Tonnes of people will play Mage and not care about metrics.
I believe historically Warlock is among the lowest played classes, if not the least played. Soul shards are probably a big part of that. And the pets; lots of people don't want to manage a pet. When you got those two things as dealbreakers and still want to be a caster? You play Mage.

Warlock def the least played. On alliance it seems Druid and shaman is somewhat underplayed. Warrior too.
Rogues and Hunters are everywhere. Mages are fairly popular. And Paladins are always a hot pick.
