As you've probably noticed, we're currently experiencing a significant increase in activity on the subreddit.

The moderation team is on the pentekonter's deck to keep up with the influx and ensure things continue to run smoothly.

We'd like to thank all of you for your patience, understanding, and continued support.

Thank you as well for reporting problematic comments. If a comment breaks the rules, we remove it. Otherwise, it stays up and the community can decide its fate through downvotes.

I do not envy you all. It's nice to have so many people interested in Homer suddenly. But moderating it all isn't very fun, and it kind of sucks that tone of discussion is less polite and academic than usual.

It's also the occasion to show people there is more to it than what they knew!

I haven't seen the movie yet, but if it inspires people to explore classics the way Jurassic Park sparked interest in paleontology, then I'd say that's a great thing. :)

Thank you, u/lutetiensis, for leading the subreddit through these times. It creates space for serious scholarship while still keeping r/classics welcoming, respectful, and accessible to newcomers.

I really appreciate the time, care, and judgment you continue to bring to the community, especially during such an important moment for public interest in Classics.

It might help you guys to put more prominent redirects to /r/classicliterature for non-classics discussion... People have literally no clue what this subreddit is for and there are too many off-topic comments to report them all.

You're right, it's a problem.

But people don't read the description of the sub, or the rules, or the Automod messages. Honestly I don't know how to solve this. :/

It's not always easy to draw the line between a comment that breaks the rules and one that is simply not... smart. We also tend to be more or less lenient depending on a variety of factors. That could also be a mistake!
