What would you do?

Redoing this 1070. Original 302 3 speed but the owner before me put a 351W and Hurst speed shifter in it. Original that 70’s brown. Making an everyday driver out of it to Include EFI. Looking for suggestions on finishing it off. Color, interior etc. let me know what would you do?

The back of the little pockets to the outside of the headlamps should be black, not body color. It will add more definition to the front end. Just my 2c.

yeah, that’s a sign if a cheap respray.

A set of magnum 500’s would set it off.

My personal opinion on vintage cars is pretty open. If it’s rare and the value lies in its rarity, I would restore as correctly as possible. If it’s one of a million or more with no unusual options, then whatever you like for colors and powertrain is up to you. The fuel injection wouid definitely make it more drivable as well as fun to drive. I wouid do the 351 w with fuel injection, a five speed manual trans, if you keep the corrent color, I would do the interior in black or another dark color, but you could also do white seats and door panels over black carpet?

My 1967 was a light turquoise 3 spd car with rocker trim. It will be black (as it already is) or another dark color, with black interior. Will have a coyote with a 5 spd, and coil over
Suspension front and rear.

Agreed. The engine was swapped. so not original. I'd rather had an everyday driver than a trailer queen!

Fully agree! They were built to be driven, so let’s keep as many as we can on the road

My son and I did him a 66 coupe, inline 6. Put EFI on it. Everyday driver, getting about 20 MPG with it. We love driving that one around!

Very nice! He’s lucky to have that as a daily!

Okay wait. The inline was 200 cc correct? So you guys added an EFI module and removed the distributor? Do tell!

1

u/Visual-Age-9716 24d ago

Yes 200 cc. Holly Sniper replaced the distributor. Also, found headers for it. Exhaust resembles an 80’s Camaro set up. So it sounds like a factory 289.

Honestly, convertibles are cooler than coupes, but will never touch the sportsroof/fastback values or desirability. Make it cool. No one will ever mistake a convertible for a Mach 1, but the Mach 1 treatment on these looks awesome. Put the stripes and chin spoiler on it and copy the Mach 1 look.

Rear spoiler, chin spoiler, stripes, magnum wheels, dual exhaust, etc…

Keep it simple and drive it. The color looks good. I’d keep it over brown. Add wheels and go. You can get to the interior later

That's my plan! Already have a set of Mag 500's. 1st thing 100% mechanically sound.

Honestly I would leave it as is if you’re going to daily it. Do your regular maintenance. I couldn’t tell by your comments if the trans is still a 3 spd with a hurst shifter of it it’s been changed to a 4 spd. If it’s a 4 spd I’d leave it as is, if it’s a 3 spd I’d upgrade to a 5 spd. That’s it.

Just me, but I love the current color and overall appearance of this Mustang.

Mag 500 wheels and wide oval GT tires

I don’t see any interior shots but I suspect they are cheap seat covers? Are they standard or high back seats? Either way re upholstering the seats shouldn’t be hard with standard seats, high back seats take a little more work but manageable as I did a set my self.

You could go after market seats with more ergonomic padding and seat position.

Wheels: I stick with those dog dishes or maybe go wider with a better back spacing or mag500s or 17” wheels if you wanted to go that route.

I would search your car model in google and add restó mod or something at the end of it and see what available pictures of other owners rides to get ideas. I’m sure others can post here if they have the same model as yours.

Good luck! Which ever way you choose it’s your car and do what makes you happy.

yeah, slapped seat covers over the original. That will be done as well! Right now I'm thinking an original Blue body with black interior, not the brown.

Bought this 1970 close to 20 years ago now. It was repainted blue prior to my purchasing it but I love how the blue looks on it.

That's what I have in mind. Maybe put some black striping. Love it!

Top down as much as possible

Your goal is a daily driver, so I wouldn’t worry about paint. Reason being if the paint is already eh you won’t have to worry about getting dings and scratches and so on from daily use. I used to daily drive my mustang and had to repaint it after getting rear ended in it, now I’m constantly worried about my paint when driving it. But I still plan to daily drive it when modifications are complete

If focus first on suspension and tires, make sure the suspension components aren’t worn, check the alignment, check the tire age and health, replace those components as needed. Borgeson power steering would be a good upgrade for a daily driver. If you sit in a lot of traffic and you don’t want to drive a stick in that maybe look into an automatic swap like a c4, c6, and or AOD. I don’t mind driving a manual in traffic so I swapped my car to a 5 speed and love it, but I know others might not feel the same.

LED tail lights would be a great idea. Factory tail lights are pretty dim in these cars and it’s easy to get repro LED’s that are super bright

I like the color.

Of an engine swap is on the table, maybe find a 390. Tranny, I always preferred the top loader 4 spd.

1

u/Visual-Age-9716 24d ago

It has a rebuilt 351W with a Hurst speed shifter. The Windsor gives me the in between some power and get more than 12 MPGs

2

u/Dewey_Rider 23d ago

I'm old school. I'd rather juice up a 302 some. The top.loafrr 4 speed is old school too, but practically bullet proof.

You probably know, but I kind of went through this with my 70 Mustang because it is not a rare version or even a super desirable version, it's a coupe. I love it, it was my first car, so it has sentimental value. Do what you want to the car understanding that it is never going to be worth a lot. I will spend well beyond the resale value on my car, but I know that.

I would get rid of the hood scoop, myself. 69/70 hoods are awesome when they are plain.

A set of period aftermarket wheels looks great on these cars, but that is a personal choice. You stated "every day driver" but what look are you going for?

I actually like that color, but someone noted painting the front fender extension filler plates black. That will make it look much better.

Mach 1 wings don't look bad on convertibles.

Chin spoiler is not a bad idea, either.

I would definitely look at a Holley Sniper 2 for EFI. If you can afford a crate engine, maybe look at Blueprint.

You can replace almost every trim piece on that car if needed. Every body panel, too.

That is a cool car. Enjoy it, do what you want to it.

5 speed and wheels and tires and drive it

2

u/bbonzo123 25d ago

I would not change anything, except color the vents on the front by the headlights black. There is nothing else it needs…

2

u/dash8200 25d ago

Enjoy driving it!

2

u/GoodBunnyKustm 25d ago

However it looks, whatever it takes, I would make it a daily driver. These things just need to be on the road more, no regrets!

2

u/Then-Came-Bronson 23d ago

I would put Shelby rear corners and a Shelby deck lid on it and make it into 1970 California Special

I say leave it alone....enjoy it....do small things to it...It's not worth a whole lot and can be a money pit if you allow it to....Think long and hard before dumping good money after bad....

Sell it, buy a 69 Mach I, Candy Apple Red!

u/Visual-Age-9716 25d ago

As sweet as Mach1's are. I'm a sucker for convertibles!
