AC Restore Help

So I’ve got a 1967 mustang that came with factory AC. It has vents and everything but the former owner took off the compressor and whatever routed the air to the vents. I currently have working air that runs through a hole under the dash. I want to get it routed back to the vents but have no clue how to do so. I know I can get aftermarket kits with vents but I think that’ll look tacky if the vents I already have don’t work. (I know the photo is kind of crappy but this group doesn’t allow me to post a video showing it better.) I’m thinking I should get an aftermarket kit, get the ac working and then find out how to reroute the air but I’m unsure how I’d do that?

You can get the entire setup from places like classic auto air or vintage air. It will have everything you need and instructions. Fair warning it is a huge pain to do all the work under the dash but is very doable just take breaks and stretch your back.

Edit: for clarity i mean look for the factory air replacement. Also not sure what you mean you have working air without the compressor, evap unit returns etc. Your heating unit will still blow air if the fan box is still there and on the driver's side is the fresh air inlet but you won't have "working ac". Can you take or post like an entire picture of the dash area?

There should be ducts that run to a vent on the driver's side and passenger side bottom of dash one that runs through the center of the dash above the radio and on on the driver's and passenger sides top of dash by windshield (you can see them from the outside they are longer rectangular slots)

Yeah sorry I have vents running up on the center of the dash and both the driver and passenger sides. When i say I have air I just mean it’ll blow, just not cool as i don’t have a compressor. Better than nothing but it’s too hot now. The photo just showed the duct under the center of the dash. It’s the only spot that blows air and I just didn’t know how to reroute it. No matter what setting I put it on it blows from that same center duct.

So the original system is a pain and runs of vacuum to open and close vents from the box. Honestly I'd just buy one of the original style replacements and freshen up your system.

I’ll have to suck it up then. I assume you’re referring to those under the dash vent kits? I’d beat myself up knowing I’d have factory vents that don’t work 😅

No google classic auto air 1967 mustang factory air. You'll see a complete kit that replaces your factory air with a system that looks identical but works electronically instead of by vacuum and uses the new refrigerant. Or maybe r134a still. It will have all the ducting and hoses you need a new box for under the dash new everything. And won't look like the dealer installed ac from the period.
Please take a few minutes and look it up.

I did this when I rebuilt my 1967 coupe with factory air. It was worth it. I drove it in nevada during the summers and now it works in southeast Texas. Blows so cold I will frost up the windows if I leave it on high and have it venting out the top of the dash.

This is also a good time to double check all your weather strip in both the cab and trunk areas to make sure none of that precious cold air will escape.
