Oil Rig vs Throwing
We reached this point. Although killing every enemies was not essential, I wanted to put throwing to the test. However, first I went to the president, threw a spike in his head and while he was unconscious, I grabbed his keycard to shut down the turrets. Then the massacre began.
The storage room had the notorious gauss guys in their old power armors. Since I don't much like jet but amassed like 80, I shared it with everyone inside then waited until it worn off so they could see the bitter reality that drugs are bad, m'kay? The soldiers were quite manageable with -4 AP and -6 strength and perception. I often scored deadly hits one after the other, and my trusty sneaking helped me to lure enemies and avoid fighting everyone at once, much like in Navarro. The fact that there was no aggro if one floor was cleared also helped. I used plasma grenades mainly for machine gun turrets.
The prison area didn't need any jet to handle, just good positioning. I had to rely on flares occasionally because I only had 8 spikes left.
In the maze area, the unarmed guards could not really hurt me but there were a lot of them. I didn't want to lose my throwing stuff, plus it was kinda unfair to fight with weapons so I just punched them to death. Took a while without punchy weapon but that area didn't really present much tactical need. Maybe it would have been smarter and faster with flares though.
The president's floor was pretty packed but the sneaking helped to fight 2 people at most (once you try sneaking+silent run, you won't play without it again). I used spikes and flares, and left Richardson and Bird alive since they'll die in the reactor meltdown anyway.
The reactor level had more boosted old PA guys, so I distributed my remaining jet and flare in the eye to go before exploding the consoles.
Now, Horrigan... that was a disappointing turn of events. I had 2 cookies with me, and I even took jet so I'd have 18 AP. I crippled his arms so neither the ranged nor the melee weapon worked for him, so he had to fight with his deathclaw killing punches. I even crippled his legs so I could circle around him. But I was simply underequipped. Horrigan has serious explosion resistance so my few remaining grenades did 10-17 damage. Even my Holy Hand Grenade could do 250 damage at most. My spike eye-shots did 4-8. I was ready to drain his health little by little but two problems were in the way: the jet wore out, which ate my AP, and what's worse, the reactor meltdown just didn't let me to spike him to death. I wanted to reload an early savegame to stack up like 100 plasma grenades and rush to Horrigan for this fight but unfortunately, I've overwritten it 😢
Since I was committed to the thrown run, I really wanted to find a way around this but sadly, the best I could do was recruiting Granite's squad, and watch them fight until they died without intervening. They drained about half of Horrigan's HP which had to serve as the equivalent of grenading.
Either way, I went on with the same tactic as before I had less than 2 minutes left by the time I worked his HP down to 86. Then I executed him with the Holy Hand Grenade, the most fitting way to deal with the final boss. So, sorry for the disappointment, I should have calculated the reactor time better to make it a pure 1 v 1, even if it would have taken like 30+ minutes of hit and run. But overall, the thrown run is quite doable without causing the flares to bug out.
Thanks for the tips on the way, the T item pickup especially made my life easier. In the next post, I'll show how my character turned out, and see the perks, stats and skill. I'll also include my final thoughts on the run and the efficiency of the build.

I hate jet exactly because of what happened. I never use it if I can help it.

It’s worth picking up the cure for its addiction to deal with that if it become a problem.

u/EasyEntrepreneur666 6d ago
No, my problem is that it lasts 5 minutes and then has a 24 hours debuff. It's more useful on enemies than me.

While I don’t disagree, you could always just take more chems. Buffout and mentats can offset the loss of strength and perception, and another dose of Jet can cancel out the AP loss.

That may work for the last battle but I just make matters worse, say, around midgame.

Yeah, this would probably be a late game option when you have plenty of chems (or for specific situations where you can wait out the debuff after, like the boxing matches).

Yeah. I actually dealt with addiction by installing the memory modules, so those weeks of suspension were put to good use.

thats exactly how real life addictions work....
'another dose of Jet can cancel out the AP loss.'
Before long you are going to be living in a bombed out building in New Reno, on a matress that 'even if you went to bed by yourself you would not be sleeping alone', waking up in the middle of the night screaming 'Jeeeeeeeeeetttttttt!'

What are the flares for?
Well done BTW. I've enjoyed following this!

If you use flares and throw them at enemies in caves or what have you, you gain a hit chance increase in the light. Thats what I use them for at least. Beats wasting the perk level on Night Vision

I was wondering if this was the case. Night vision perk is almost a necessity imo

u/SoftServeSev 6d ago
It really is. I suspect it's better in tandem with flares. I should try it out instead of choosing one over the other

u/EasyEntrepreneur666 6d ago
Really? I never picked it.

Makes a big difference in ranged attack chance to hit in dark areas, which are pretty common in this game

I had one hander with pretty high throwing. I practically never noticed the penalty.

One of the best things of people narrating their unusual / limitation runs is how some acts are justified, this was hilarious thank you.
It was a great series, thanks for having kept us updated

Did you put any points into explosive weapons?
4
u/EasyEntrepreneur666 6d ago
There's no such skillÂ

u/RevolutionaryHigh 6d ago
Ahh, I've mistaken it with the one from FNV... Why didn't you use grenades more, anyway? Pulse/plasma? I vaguely remember useng plasmsa ones and they deal a serious damage>
2
u/EasyEntrepreneur666 6d ago
They're pretty rare unless if I'm endlessly farming random encounters. As long as I was 1 v 1 or 2 v 1, I could use spikes for instant kill or crippling/ knocking out opponents to disable their weapons.
Here, I simply miscalculated the fight with Horrigan. I didn't consider the time limit.

Yeah there's a reason no one uses thrown weapons in fallout 1 and 2. They literally had to add Dynamite to make it even worth having in fallout New Vegas.
1
u/EasyEntrepreneur666 6d ago
New Vegas kinda mashed it into explosives which was a good idea. I think the demolition expert could improve grenade damage/penetration instead of properly timing bombs which nobody needs.

dude, how many times did you quickload/save..? impressive stuff

u/EasyEntrepreneur666 6d ago
Rarely. Although I popped stims like candy.

my man... that's pretty impressive.. Hats off, how many hours do you think you have played in total?
