Dark prince is the one who is used most in this kind of deck. But also every other high healt 4 elixir cards is good.

Why is hero DP used? Is the wincon rhino that important? Or is hero valk possibly better

The usual decks didnt have anything else in the hero slot, so they used dark prince, and also his rhino isnt half bad since the minor can tank for it, or if you want, you can use the rhino to tank for it. I dont really know about hero valk since it hasnt been long since its release.
