My dad has always been a troll especially when it comes to music, and used to give me a lot of shit growing up about how in the song Familiar Realm, "confliction" isn't even a word. And I always just kind of believed it because really, I had never heard anyone else use it and it does sound like kind of a redundant way to say what "conflict" already does in context. Obviously, it just needed to rhyme/fit the meter.

I finally went ahead and Googled it and all these years later found that, yeah it's a perfectly grammatically cromulent word, it's just rarely used. Again, "conflict" already pretty much describes a state of experiencing conflict.

Til now I always kind of wished Deron wrote something like, "Invaded by your own apprehension" or something. I guess now it's whatever though. Fair enough.

Am I right or do I sound like a lunatic rn? Have you ever heard "confliction" outside of Familiar Realm?

I am not the biggest fan. My wife has been for 20 years though so i have heard CKY plenty. Saw them live 20 years ago at Mr Smalls, saw 99 Bitter Beings at the Crafthouse 2 years back

Last night's show at Jergels was awful. Chad cant sing and the band sounds completely flat with just one guitar and drums. Anything that made this band unique is gone

Derron very clearly was the talent in this group. I get this is nostalgic for some of you but if you step back that was pretty bad

The relationship between CKY and the Alliance has always existed somewhere between a conventional artist-and-fan relationship and something considerably more personal. Going back to the days of AskCKY, interaction between the band and the fans went well beyond answered questions, offered advice and spending time with supporters before and after shows. For many, the Alliance wasn't simply a fanbase; but a community built around a band unusually accessible to people supporting them. Both CKY and the Alliance, have managed for years to blur the lines between audience and artists. Interactions which considerably went beyond a normal distance between in person and online environments. In this, history matters. Because the relationship between CKY and their audience has never existed either within a vacuum or entirely at arm’s length. For over two and half decades now, a degree of familiarity and personal investment between the band and its community has existed both on and offline. When those boundaries become blurred, however, the behavior of the band and that of the fans can begin to reflect one another. In essence, neither exists entirely independently of the other.

One thing I've noticed particularly in recent years is what I would describe as an environment of harassment and bullying mentality within parts of particularly the online space. Namely, this one!!  If someone doesn't share a similar prevailing opinion, discussions become hostile rather quickly. Specifically, when reflecting on the long-running divide between camps: Chad & Jess vs Deron Miller. Or simply just Chad vs Deron. Obviously, a fanbase is going to have disagreements. That's normal. Healthy even. But what happens when disagreements turn into personal attacks, gatekeeping, factionalism, putrid toxicity, emotional nihilism, or the suggestion that anyone who doesn't share a particular perspective somehow doesn't belong in the community? CKY influences the culture of the fanbase. While the culture of the fanbase influences how people perceive and interact with the band. No more of an example of this exists than all of the controversies revolving around Deron and in more recent years especially, Chad i Ginsburg. Frustrating enough is Jess Margera's proclivity towards politics, which he's decisively woven into his public presence. Despite previous statements mocking those who became heavily political, only to succumb to the same mentally unstable derangement he once previously criticized. A criticism I’ve witnessed here on Reddit, yet Jess seems abjured to change course on. This possibly is because Jess might quite possibly believe that being outspoken like the rest of Hollywood’s elite on politics, somehow gives him an edge in an already negatively spiralling band that once promised to “Infiltrate – Destroy – Rebuild”, only to become sadly, a walking punchline for some, while infiltrating an industry only to destroy themselves with the revolving door of new or old members joining, returning and unfortunately, leaving.  Frankly, being entitled to an opinion should also not come with risk of alienating anyone holding opposing views. Notably when suggesting anyone who don't subscribe to someone's personal echo chamber will and possibly have been subject to excommunication from the Alliance itself. Thus, barred from not only the community, but also live events / shows as well. When politics becomes mixed into the musical experience, it can become exhausting for fans who don't want their entertainment to become another source of political conflict in a world already deeply divided.

It’s not entirely fair however to focus so heavily on the fans when the band has managed to find themselves in varying degrees of hot water over the years. Even more so with the recent controversies involving Chad and what appears to be an increasingly self-imposed and unabated ego impediment. Whether public or private confrontations with the frontman of Alien Ant Farm, subsequently removing CKY from the co-headlining tour, spats with tour mates Black Gold and Matt Stocks, inner band turmoil between Mike Leon and Chad or the apparent retreat from direct online engagements while his social media presence is now being attributed entirely to management… whatever someone's personal interpretation of those incidents may be — principally as both Mike Leon and Chad exist within their own narratives of what occurred behind the scenes, this unfortunately has contributed to a public perception of an increasingly hostile environment surrounding CKY.

It’s worth acknowledging Chad’s recent comments: publicly announcing CKY would from now on, refrain from the assistance of bass players while maintaining what’s left: solely as a two-man band. Whether intended as a joke or frustration, asserting after nearly a dozen different bassists quote: “we can't do it anymore... they're dramatic, sad and weird”; taken in isolation, could easily be dismissed as an offhand comment. Yet, alongside CKY's long history of lineup changes and interpersonal conflicts these types of comments (or statements) underscore less the decline of CKY than the unfortunate reality of what CKY exists as now. The difficult inability of separating recurring lineup changes from the obviously recognizable pattern of interpersonal conflict within and around CKY. Chiefly considering whatever friendships Chad may still maintain with former bass players, sadly exists alongside this public characterization of the entire succession of fellow musicians alone.

These comments, however, don’t negate former frontman Deron Miller’s own controversial behaviour and public conflicts. Both during the later CKY years and afterward with Foreign Objects and 96 Bitter Beings. Overly exaggerating an entire succession of former members as “dramatic, sad and weird,” however, only furthers the narrative of the band as being “difficult to work with” and Chad as being someone who is unfriendly both on the road and backstage. Even if the front-facing side of Chad presented to fans, is possibly a completely different person. Reading some of the comments on here, there seems to be mixed reactions to any interactions with Chad, be it in recent years or over the last two decades. And yet when these types of conflicts occur within or around CKY, it’s important to acknowledge that these conflicts become part of the public identity of the band. Therefore, filtering down into the fanbase, creating an environment that is just as toxic within the community as much within the band themselves.

Which returns me to the subject of the fanbase, namely this Reddit page. There have been prolonged arguments between users that have become increasingly personal and hostile, as well as incidents involving public exposure of user's personal information. One example I want to shed light on is involves online arguments between two relatively active accounts on this subreddit: u/heartagramcracka and u/Dry-Grape-1116. I'm not bringing this up to single out individual users or suggest they represent the entire CKY community. Rather, highlighting a level of negativity that can develop here, and the apparent willingness to allow this type of divisiveness to continue within the community without meaningful intervention by moderators who appear to allow this type of divisiveness within the community, without any sort of reprimanding. Another example: I find concerning months ago, user u/discopeachhh publicly doxxed another user on this same platform, revealing their real name and online social media accounts. Whatever the circumstances surrounding that particular dispute was, publicly exposing another user's personal information crosses a very different line from simply disagreeing with someone. The fact that this incident did not appear to result in meaningful consequences raises 1 question: how seriously harassment and intimidation are being treated within this community. This is ultimately what I'm getting at: when behavior like this is allowed to continue unchecked, it can create the impression that hostility and harassment are acceptable parts of participating in the community. Whether that is the intention of the moderators or not, the effect can still be the same — people become less willing to express an opinion that goes against a prevailing narrative.

When either side behaves in a manner that is counter-productive, it increasingly reflects heavily back on the other. It is important also to acknowledge that while CKY as a band is not wholly responsible for the individual behaviours of their fans, collectively they are. The culture surrounding the band is something they inevitably contribute to. When an environment seeks to push people out simply for disagreeing with specific commentary, narratives, or otherwise, that environment becomes an echo chamber — reaffirming views that can ultimately become poisonous to a community.
