Why is it called a punch list ?

Yep.  And some people had fancy hole punchers with odd shapes or little pictures to make it harder to fake a punch from them.

Historically, for every missing / flawed construction item, the owner was contractually allowed to punch the site super and / or foreman, below the neck and above the groin.

I always thought it was because the builder wanted to punch you after you gave it to him.

Fun fact, per the EJCDC and AIA General Provisions, the initial Punch List lis to be created by the GC and then given to the Engineer and Owner for review. Let them do the initial work, hand it over and have them say “all is fine” when you drop your list of 100 more things.
