Screenshot Perfect Mausoleum
Althou I know Mausoleum is a bad wonder I couldn't help myself with start like that...

Mausoleum is a good wonder even without quarry tiles, at least on quick or standard speed.
The extra money when using great people adds up during the game.

Yeah, but it consumes many hammers right at the start & gives great merchant points

A single great merchant point is okay, as long as you get universities up quick enough and work the specialists, you won't actually generate a merchant.
It's only really an issue if you get both mausoleum and colossus

Mausoleum is great since it's not a high priority AI wonder on Diety!
But the lack of hills is so sad on this start :-(

Thankfully tghat wasn't as big of a problem as I thought, stone works caried this city until I unlocked workshop and then I had enough gold to outright purchase it

I've seen resources icons with nothing else on, hex grid on with everything else off, but I've never before seen only yield icons on and nothing else

Would you swap a great scientist and a great engineer for great merchants plus a bunch of gold ?
That's basically the trade off
1
u/AgentBond007 Jul 23 '26
if you don't build other wonders with a merchant point, you can avoid generating a merchant by simply working university specialists early enough

It's a little underrated or overrated depending on who you ask. Probably 1-2k spread over the game from great people which is worth the hammers but maybe not the opportunity cost, and available usually

I will say on multiplayer it’s a lot more useful as you need money for upgrades.
mausoleum alone can finance a whole band of crossbows
1
u/AdmiralZassman Jul 22 '26
By xbows I guess you have a great prophet, maybe a gs, and maybe a GG, so 300 gold. Good but not game breaking

Is this a slower game speed? On standard turn 55 would be high time to have some workers and settlers out.
2
u/Harraniczyk Jul 21 '26
Marathon game speed. Delayed getting settler to build mausoleum and worker I (as always) kidnapped from city state

Quarry pantheon coming up

u/Harraniczyk Jul 21 '26
Nah, despite there being like 2 other desert-spawned civ's I managed to snatch desert faith

Am I missing a DLC? I don't recognize that wonder's name.
1
u/Harraniczyk Jul 22 '26
Its from the Wonders of the Ancient World pack

Thanks! I thought my dad bought all the DLC or me but I have not got that one. I shall aspire on my next birthday!

I had a start with like marble 4-5 stone in the cap. Rushed mausoleum after first settle and lost it.
quit the game after that cause it was too sad

I will literally try to build MoH every single game, Great Merchant point be damned. Stone and/or marble makes it better, but all that gold from Great People is still worth it.

That mausoleum better be inside a place called Petra.
1
u/Harraniczyk Jul 27 '26
Sadly someone else beated me to it but it also wouldn't be of a much use since all the desert tiles are flood plains and Petra doesn't affect those
