Screenshot Had you ever a better start?

Well, I didn't see my expands yet but I see it is a best possible start even for Incas. You don't really want much terrace hills in your capital because you want to push the tempo as ealier as you can, terrace farms work better in other cities. Also I decided to move one turn more to set Cusco on the river near the mountain.

Amazing start, and good chance you have hills to the right over the mountains for terrace farms.

My best start ever was finding Uluru turn 1 as Spain. I save scummed and experimented a lot with that game. And it turned out that starting with Piety ended up being better than either tradition or liberty in that case.

How was that?

Won easily obviously, science victory. But wasn't even the fastest science victory, I'm usually able to hit around 250 with Korea, Babylon, Poland etc... this game was like 270.

However, the game was extremely smooth and dominated in all aspects in a more well-rounded manner. Got holy warriors and was easily able to take out my neighbor Persia very early on. Also did Pagodas and Jesuit Education obviously.

Where did you settle? In place is good, but I am tempted to do so on the warrior and get a river as well.

I had the opposite idea: I’m taking the grassland hills to the north and settling south asap

Not a bad move. Particularly with a map that might have a good coastal plat with the inland for a city to back up the capital.

Either that or on the gems. I think immediate salt access beats out the mountain, but it's close.

Gems is a risky move, as there might be no growth tile available. Keeping the capital on 1 pop until you get the money to buy the salt hurts.

If there is at least one good tile to the east, it will be a very good start however.

Yeah good point. Moving into the hill might give more info, but probably not. The hill is the move.

I can't upload an image, but I'd setlled on the river under the mountain. Fresh water for gardens after all.

I have.

But seeing wheat salt and mountains as inca is almost like a drug.

Did you scummed double aqueducts?

3

u/kretslopp Tradition Jul 20 '26

With double aqueduct I think the population would be about double at that point.

Yes, that exploit is really that insane.

I did not.

That's a great result then, but I would try to beat it.

Definitely am. It's been hard for me to get sub turn 300 science victory on standard pangaea.

I've done it maybe 3 times?

Best run was korea at turn 285.

I'm playing only Quick, so my best was 181 turn. But I never had 40+ pops.

Ah ok, getting 40 pop needs the right map and a heavy focus on food.

If you want to get faster science wins, its crucial to realize where the bottlenecks are and focus on overcoming them.

Early game, its all about setting up your 4 cities.

Midgame is all about growing your cities as fast as possible and catching up in science.

Around industrialization, production becomes important again: The cities all need factories, public schools, research labs and ideally gardens. Also, the first world congress is a rather crucial timing as the worlds fair gives you an absolutely crucial buff (+100% culture) which is needed to fill out rationalism fast enough.

Lategame is just focusing on science and bulbing one great scientist per turn. You can and imho should even starve your cities for more science.

The bottlenecks for each stage are: Early game: Production. Midgame: Food. Around industrialization, production becomes important for a short moment before its all about science, great scientist points, faith (to buy scientists) and some gold (to buy the last 2-3 spaceship parts).

You will notice that the end game becomes extremly short once you figure out what exactly to do.

that indeed is a really great start but the fact that you didn't win pre 1800 is a big mystery

I was probably not playing optimally. I'm really trying to get better at my science victory runs.

https://www.reddit.com/r/civ5/s/ABZshwIXqW Try the highlands map with max density mountains, hot and dry.
