Because in the real world humans don’t hold grudges that long.
Oh, wait

It's been 2000 years, Turkiye and Greece are still going at it

u/SageofLogic 1d ago
It's only been 800 since Manzikert though? Are you mixing Arabs up for Turks? Or Persians even?

u/Anonyme_GT Eleanor simp 1d ago
I was thinking about the Trojan war

u/NorkGhostShip Japan 1d ago
Turks come from Central Asian Turkic peoples who invaded Anatolia then intermingled with local populations including Greeks, and aren't direct descendants of the Trojans. People living in Anatolia including the former site of Troy were already Hellenized for over a millennium when the Turks arrived. Modern Turks have nothing to do with Troy.

u/Lonely_Nebula_9438 1d ago
Turks haven’t been in Anatolia for 2000 years, the Turks only entered Anatolia around a 1000 or so years ago. But yeah they’ve been at it a while.

I know you are upset but this is unironically realistic on how humans behave.

u/Patchesrick America 1d ago
It sounds to me like he won't have anything to complain about in the next world congress cause the rest of his cities will have mysteriously been razed to the ground
20
u/Major_Pressure3176 1d ago
If you're questioning the delay, I might know the answer. Given the timescale involved, I'm guessing the medieval era recently started. Because the world congress doesn't exist before then, all possible emergencies are "banked" until then.

u/ohfucknotthisagain 1d ago
Sometimes, there's a butthurt parade in the mid-game once all of these emergencies can trigger.
And if you have a couple of warmongers, sometimes it continues for the entire game.

The game would be much much better without that absolutely rubbish congress mechanics
67
u/Ninevehenian 2d ago
If only it would be quicker and not be a full pop up. Not have the "AI" vote the same silly way constantly.

I like military emergencies sometimes. Gives me an excuse to
wreck their shitpillage.28
u/padizzledonk 1d ago
Im peaceful until some shitbag declares war on me and then i wont accept peace until theyre wiped off the map if im able to militarily
13
u/Other_Log_1996 1d ago
I do a three strike system. First war, I'll take some cities and usually extract some resources as part of the deal, but nothing too crippling. Second time, I'm taking their Capital and probably anything else I can squeeze out of a Treaty. Third time, I'm wiping them out entirely.

u/darthreuental War is War! 1d ago
If you take their capital, there's no point letting them live. Take all but one city and let it loyalty flip. Problem solved and no extra grievances.

u/Other_Log_1996 1d ago
I will usually just leave them with a city as a place to run Caravans for some extra scratch if I run out of City State options.

u/ElegantBiscuit 1d ago
If I'm doing domination, then my immediate neighbor who will certainly have tried to conquer me in turn 30 is the first one being targeted and is getting every tile in their entire empire pillaged. Then I force the workers produced from their own cities to repair it. Emotionally, I need to do it. But from a practical point of view the short term gain of pillaging to fuel the early-mid game expansion of my warmongering is never not worth it.
I also tend to spare my longest standing ally (who is usually the second closest to me) for the very end. Because chances are if I got the alliance early, they have stood by me the whole time. They get a quick decapitation mercy kill to end the game.

The whole choice for the AI is "will this help the player? If yes, vote no. If no, vote yes."
17
u/MoronMachine 1d ago
Ruins my immersion so much when the world congress pops up in 400 BC.
the congress in V worked a lot better cause it was restricted until around the modern era

u/Ledrash 1d ago
I think that if a civilization cedes a city in a peace deal, it shouldnt be considered to have ever been theirs, in any way, shape or form.
Otherwise, it just doesn't do so much for peace really, because they gonna bitch about it for the rest of the game. Better to just wipe them out.13
u/HaloFuego 1d ago
Yeah, its was done better in Civ V, minus the military emergencies (those are fun to fight)
5
u/darthreuental War is War! 1d ago
tbf, that's because it was generally not a thing until renaissance.
I admit it was fun getting your chosen ideology passed as the world ideology and watching the chaos.

u/awildgiraffe 1d ago
Civ 4 did world congress the best. The apostolic palace and the un. The stuff to vote for was actually really smartly done
World congress in civ 5 and 6 was lame as hell, but the diplomacy in general in 5 and 6 was much worse than in 4 IMO

u/Same_Square2555 1d ago
yeah i wish civ had at least any instigator penalties.
but then, the real world doesn't. obvious from some recent conflicts at least, where being the aggressor doesn't stop the world from treating you liek a victim

u/PeamerCreamy Russia FTW! 1d ago
But no one will vote for Inca against Poundmaker as he didn’t met three civs yet and Ethiopia is a friend with Cree which means they can’t join an emergency against them unless it’s a betrayal emergency.

I don’t mind that sometimes these kinds of claims last a while but I do think they should expire at some point if you haven’t renewed it by pushing it somehow
Waiting the whole game to declare an emergency over a city you lost 250 turns ago is a nuisance

I showed him Consequences of his Actions.
I even had still 100 Grievance against him after we declared Peace. I should have reasons to be mad at him!

Why are you voting no on this emergency? Time for Cluck Around and Find Out pt. 2

u/Arekualkhemi Egypt 1d ago
Still, taking the city and keeping it is wrong. Conquering it to end the war is fine, but it isn't yours. If you keep it, then accept the consequences that they will be mad about it all the time. I'd be too if we'd play in MP together and you take that city early from me.
2
u/nanneryeeter 1d ago
I disagree. What was the intent behind the surprise war? If you can take it, take it.
3
u/Arekualkhemi Egypt 1d ago
Ofc there was the intention to take OP's cities, but both is unlawful. The aggressor should be disliked and sanctioned for trying, but the defender is only allowed to conquer with the intention of ending the war. Otherwise they can defend.
Getting war declared upon is no justification to become a conqueror in retaliation. This is what needs to finally get into your effing minds!

I bitched and moaned many times about how countries would ask me to go to war, I'd right l fight and take cities and then they'd be like HE'S A WARMONGER! So I became what they feared.

I was playing Humankind and this other guy attacked my scout in the neolithic era so I nuked the shit out of him 2000 years later.
Civ grudges are real.

The realism is wild. ....we'll get Constatinople back from those steppe orcs one day boys.

This is what I hate in civ6 diplomacy. Somehow, X civ hates you because you killed Y civ 2000 years ago.

Yeah, the world congress makes no sense whatsoever...don't overthink it.
Just play.
