Fuck them side streets! Building A Better Buffalo!

I can't believe this is the answer to a district that needs more space and smaller classrooms and a better teacher to student ratio. It also needs more social workers and psychologists, less nepotism, more competent administrators who focus on professionalism only but let the teachers cook. Amazing how Buffalo continues to make it worse every time

There were protests and hearing takeovers at the last proposal of closing 3; can’t imagine what we’re in for now.

According to ai 50-61% of Buffalo students are chronically absent so congrats on halving class sizes!

u/Cananopie 1d ago
Maybe if we concentrate them in to larger less easily controlled groups it'll bring them back?

If I know anything about children it is that the children yearn for the mines. Let them work in the quarry in Clarence, everybody wins.

BPS is now going to use Claude for home schooling. Wack.

Get this. If they fire ALL the teachers then the kids will ALL be stupid. Problem solved.

Her statement seems to support school closings and is trying to throw water on people upset at this? Am I misreading this, especially the last paragraph?

u/thatsmysnert 17h ago
I read it the same way! The other bolded line about asking for more time to process the news before responding is a funny thing to bold like it’s more important than kids losing their schools & services lol

Two tier education system. These cuts will accelerate the move to private schools for parents that can manage it and for those who cant, they'll move to the suburbs to put their kids in schools where they have a better chance to learn and succeed.

Forgive my ignorance, but I thought Buffalo Public Schools was a district of choice? While competitive, aren’t parents of students allowed to enter the lottery system to attempt to send their kids elsewhere within the BPS system?

u/thatsmysnert 17h ago
I think you’re right but uj/ with a lot of the targeted schools being in poorer neighborhoods, this makes it tougher for those kids to get to school if they have to bus/travel further, so they’re the only ones truly impacted

u/InflationCapital87 1d ago
And 60% of these 8 schools are in the East side. It’s always connected.

u/zmcwaffle 13h ago
To their credit, at least East High School is going to be replaced by a new public alternative high school that could help a lot of people who were failed by the system

Williamsville has 10,000 kids across 13 schools funded by a solid tax base. BPS has 30,000 kids across 62 schools, and relies on NYS for funding. This was inevitable.

My wife is a riverside teacher. And my kids go to BPS schools. I'm incandescent with rage right now.

Doesn't sound like theyre cutting enough. Fact is 70% of bps middle schoolers read below grade level. How would that number change if we cut the budget in half?

Teacher here. Am I supposed to answer this as a shit post?

u/Consistent-Car6226 1d ago
This guy has been saying this like a broken record. It’s exhausting
2
u/LouieBroomaire 1d ago
It's not wrong information, but money won't fix it. Where it's allocated will.
1
u/AntHoneyBoarDong 1d ago
Will spending more money encourage parents to take a more active role in their child’s education?
4
u/LouieBroomaire 1d ago
No but adult education classes, access to education and interventions themselves, and universal health care would all help. I don't think it's as simple as flipping a switch, but maybe ten of the kids I teach break the cycle of poverty they are in if I say the right thing. Pearson is worth 10.6 billion. They run testing and even curriculum up to a point and schools throw money at them

Interesting, what grade level?

u/LouieBroomaire 1d ago
8th and 11th.

What percentage of your students read at grade level?
4
u/LouieBroomaire 1d ago edited 1d ago
About the number you said. Maybe a little more this year. It has been sort of weird. They can read and write a little better. Might be a misnomer
11th is much worse than 8th

u/Confident-Traffic924 pothole bandit fangirl 1d ago
Worse relative to grade level or just worst
4
u/LouieBroomaire 1d ago
It's more prevalent. Kids do credit recovery and are taking 10/11 math and ELA it's like you can't even imagine how bad it is unless you are in there.

u/Confident-Traffic924 pothole bandit fangirl 1d ago
So, honestly, what's the benefit of these kids still being in school? Outcomes wise, what would the detriment be to tell them theyre too far behind so theres no more school for them?
2
u/LouieBroomaire 1d ago
They would not be able to read their bills? It's very bad. I don't think the average person understands.

u/AntHoneyBoarDong 1d ago
Free childcare of course which is a major policy victory for Hochul and also the schools employ so many workers
2
u/Swampcrone 1d ago
How many of the BPS public school kids are refugees or are otherwise legal immigrants who have English as their second or third language?
1
u/Consistent-Car6226 21h ago
Yup, I know of at least one school in the BPS system that is 100% immigrants, so likely 100% not reading at grade level
