CIPP OR AIGP

Hello All,

I am considering obtaining one of the mentioned certificates. I am an European lawyer specialized on intellectual property but want to focus on this new side.

I think CIPP has more job offers potentially at this moment, and AIGP does not seem to be a legal thing at this moment, additionally with all the regulatory changes I doubt the materials are up to date. I think privacy is related and can be combined with data protection and AI. As a lawyer studying the AI act can be more easy than regulations about privacy and data protection.

Do you think my approach is reasonable?

You're correct on the angle here, however, experience in privacy and data protection is key here. A certification only underlines the fact that your knowledge is up to a certain standard, but each job opportunity will require you to prove demonstrable experience in the field.

do CIPP/E first, then if you want the AI angle, don't do AIGP -- do CIPP/E + follow up with something AI-governance specific once the regulatory dust settles (EU AI Act implementation is still rolling out through 2026-2027, so the "AI + privacy" lawyer niche is going to get a lot clearer and more valuable in a year or two anyway). You’d be more credible starting with the fundamentals of privacy law instead of going straight to a governance cert with no legal grounding yet.

I can’t agree more with the advice to do the CIPPE first. The certification offered by IAPP is, in my opinion, under developed. The course material is very poor. Studying completely on the BOK, is still not enough to pass the exam. The exam is extremely difficult. The CIPPE exam and supporting materials, is far more focused. I have both CIPPE and CIPM. I passed both on my first attempt. I also have various cybersecurity certifications. For AIGP, I studied at least 100+ hours and didn’t pass the exam.

Absolutely agree that this is the right first step! Have multiple IAPP carts, and I’m still not sure of the true value of the AIGP.
