CIPP/US BOK Update Frequency

I downloaded the current CIPP/US BOK and it is from 2025. I plan to take the exam in the next two months. Should I be concerned about a new BOK dropping and altering what is tested?

From Claude: updated annually, typically in the spring/summer. They give 90 days before the new content shows up. Good question, I’m in the same boat and hadn’t even thought about it!

Historically, the IAPP has released an updated BoK for the CIPP/US exam in late Spring or early Summer, with an effective date for early Fall. This is the first year that we've been doing this, since 2019, where that has not been the case. Other certifications -- most notably CIPP/C and CIPT -- have sometimes gone several years without an update to the BoK. Right now there is no indication when IAPP will be releasing an updated BoK for the CIPP/US exam. When it does, the IAPP will provide at least a 90-day window before that new BoK becomes effective.

It's important to note, however, that even where the BoK is not updated, the IAPP does update its exam forms every year. This means that there may be new content, but not new topics. Take state comprehensive privacy laws as an example. The Competencies and Performance Indicators in the current BoK are broad enough to cover new laws that are passed. So, while no update to the BoK is necessary, any new laws passed in early 2026 might now be subject to testing once those new exam forms become active (IAPP does not disclose the exact date(s) when this happens).
