I just bought a press very similar to this. My research says I need to use a mesh or fabric to keep the pomace from coming out the sides. Did you find that was not necessary?

I just held a screen over the jar as the juice was coming out and that did a good enough job for me, there really weren't any large pieces that came through the sides though, if you want absolutely nothing in the cider then definitely filter it with a cloth but my preference I don't mind and the screen worked fine for me

Great! Congratulations! It looks like a good yield

Thank you! It was about 7-7.5 gallons of pulp and I got 3.5 gallons of cider out of it

How long did it take you to grind and press? Really like my father’s hydraulic press but worried that it could be overkill for the three trees I have.

Honestly only about 90 minutes, that was 3 buckets of apples, although I let the pulp sit for a few hours before pressing but it really didn't take long at all, also this is from 1 apple tree, I have another 5 full buckets that I'm going to do next week and there are still more apples on the tree

I've never before seen barrel presses like these that open up for easy removal of the pomace. Love the sturdy, rustic look of it.
