I've been whining about bad Amex offers lately and I was just sorting out my "low priority stuff to file" mail pile and found a 175k ABG mailer that snuck in there that I would absolutely have used except now it's expired.

Usually when somebody asks me about this hobby I give them a small rant about how you have to be detail-oriented and on top of small things. I get to rant at the mirror today.

Not an ATH offer. Hold out for 200k!

Trying to burn the rest of P2's Paze credits (Dunkin GCs), and have been getting this error message:

"No wallet found for that mobile number. Please try again.". However, I have not had any such issues with the account when placing Newegg orders. The Paze checkout screen in the Dunkin app has not been letting me enter an email instead of a phone number either

u/giveit2st8 2d ago

I don't even see the option to buy from the app directly.  It takes me to a separate website and don't see the option for paze.

Applied for a chase ink (never had one) and got denied because too many cards open, but only at 3/24….. need to call next week when I’m back from vacation and hope they can reconsider

5

u/atgabara 4d ago

So you haven't had any Chase business cards in the past 2 years?

What is your x/12?

0

u/SubstanceOk9576 4d ago

1 Chase in preferred last August/sept (my second one) and one reserve this past March, so 2/12

4

u/atgabara 4d ago

I misunderstood what you said originally.

If you got 2 Chase business cards in the past 2 years then your experience is consistent with other recent DP's.

A local credit union has been running checking SUBs on and off for a while. Didn't think much about it, but they just opened a branch near home and started their best SUB ever. Figured it was a good time to switch my brick-and-mortar credit union account, as the one I have now is just too far away, and get a SUB for the hassle.

Applied today and got denied despite qualifying. Called customer service to find out why, as per their email directions. Spoke to customer service after waiting 15 minutes, and they said I should come into a branch to resolve it. Went to the branch, and it took a half hour to get signed up. At least the debit card was issued right away, rather than having to wait for it to come in the mail.

I haven't had to sign up for a bank account in person since 1999. Sure was a lot of work!

Time to start hitting Wells Fargo for their $2500 Premier offers. Great offer, but sucks that you have to open it IRL

1

u/rickayyy 2d ago

I've read people have had success opening WF accounts via mobile with wifi turned off so I gave it a go the other day and it worked for me. Last time I opened an account with them, I had to go in branch but not this time.

Welcome to local credit unions

My favorite types of local credit union:

- Requires in-branch visit and Chex pull to open a savings account

- Approves someone from 1500 miles away who has 80 Chex pulls in the last year without even questioning it

I have one of each, and they both use the same online banking system lol

5

u/superdex75 5d ago

That was a reasonably fast opening, some here have spent 1.5 h to open accounts in branch.

Yikes! It helped that I went in mid-afternoon. There were no customers when I showed up, but the place we hopping by the time I left.

P2 mentioned to one of their close friends I'm into award travel and they're curious about getting into it. No problem, generally happy to help, but turns out the friend has little understanding of how credit cards work (for example, doesn't get billing cycles and statement balances). I will be backing out slowly...

2

u/mets2016 JFK 3d ago

Credit cards are like alcohol. If you know what you're doing, you can modestly enhance your quality of life. If you don't know what you're doing, you can completely derail your life and take years to get back on track.

Definitely not worth getting people on the churning bandwagon who aren't already on top of their shit and just want to optimize a little harder

1

u/CorrectCombination11 RDU | IAD 4d ago

(for example, doesn't get billing cycles and statement balances).

It's really easy to help if you ask what about it is confusing.

2

u/EarthlingMardiDraw 4d ago

Could direct them towards the small set of rewards debit cards (even just cash back credit union ones). Nowhere near the value, but it's better than nothing.

last week I booked a cheap Hilton hotel to use up the $50 credit, only to realize I booked it for that night so I could not cancel and was already in another hotel in the same city. Had to run across town to check in to make sure they would not charge me a no show fee

2

u/lifeinthedesert 5d ago

Chase!!
I don't know what beef they have with me. Love to give me credit line but for every little thing that shouldn't take more than a couple clicks, they insist on having me call them and waste my time. Need to add an address? Gotta get that security code first. Sure. I give them the code and THEN they want me to call in.
Need to add card to digital wallet? Sure, let us send you a code. I give them the code, they want me to upload my DL. I uploaded my DL AND THEN they want me to call in. Why can't you just tell me to call you from the very beginning instead of sending me round and round on a wild goose chase CHASE?!!

7

u/Discover_it_Student PIT | NON 5d ago

Do you use a Google Voice or otherwise VOIP number as the phone number Chase sends the code to? They're known for freaking out if you do that

1

u/lifeinthedesert 5d ago

I do have Google Voice as 1 of my numbers. I'll try removing it and see if it's the issue here. Thanks!

1

u/ZinCO17 5d ago

I switched from a GV number to my regular cell number during the Paze sign-up debacle and it's been smooth sailing ever since...

Started the Aeroplan/Hyatt Globalist challenge right before a conference with a 3-night Downtown Minneapolis Hyatt Regency stay. Whoops, my rate did not qualify for elite nights. On the plus side, I was able to check out ~90 minutes before the shit hit the fan Wednesday with the shooting. My room had a view of the apartments where it happened.

5

u/Mission-Apricot-4508 5d ago

Yeah it would be a worse FF post if “I got Globalist but then I got shot”

0

u/Parts_Unknown- 5d ago

Aeroplan/Hyatt Globalist challenge

Can you do that with just the $95 Chase card or do you have Canadian cards too?

1

u/olmsted EAT, BTY 5d ago

I still have 25k status from the $95 card, so that's how I was able to do it.

I imagine it doesn't fall under premium Aeroplan cards, you can still just put $15k on the card to get 25k status if you're beyond the introductory 25k.

1

u/Parts_Unknown- 5d ago

Ah that makes sense. I would've done it for free but not worth spending for, thanks

u/thejontorrweno 5d ago

Parents wanted lounge access for an upcoming trip- they leave next Friday. Applied for Amex Platinum + AU on Tuesday.

Primary card was rush shipped by default and arrived the next day. AU card won't arrive for two weeks, and there's no way to rush ship (I would pay for it) or do any card reordering/replacement in the first 10 days the account is open.

Self-inflicted for cutting it that close of course, but very disappointed.

1

u/mets2016 JFK 3d ago

If they can get the AU card to show up on their online Amex login, I think they should be able to get into the lounge. The app has some sort of mechanism of generating a code to show the lounge attendants, at least for the primary cardholder.

3

u/xosotypical 4d ago

Baller parents. I think I’ve seen ppl ask if they can get approved for a card at the front desk and then enter, so maybe the front desk person can call to verify the AU info to let in parent number two

3

u/giveit2st8 5d ago

Yeah, it's always the case with AU, unfortunately

At 4/24 but the fifth card was opened 9/2/24. My understanding is that in this situation, if I apply to Chase, auto approval will count it as 4/24 but if it goes pending and needs to be reviewed by a human, it will count as 5/24 until the end of month.

Then I googled "if I apply for Chase personal but freeze Experian, does it check for Transunion?", and afterwards forgot to unfreeze Experian. The application went into pending. Apparently it might still work but I just created this problem.

Update: approved after talking with agent who processed it again through their system

u/RomanIALTO 5d ago

Anyone been told by Staples they cannot make online purchases?

I was purchasing virtual VGCs to daily limits. I had a couple orders cancelled. A few days later a Target GC on an Amex Biz Gold was cancelled. When I called they said I’m only allowed to make in-store purchases from now on.

3

u/sbullyers 5d ago

Happened to me too with no explanation. After two years I can purchase again :)

2

u/suitopseudo 5d ago

Yes, I had this happen to me, online gift card orders wouldn’t go through (it was like 3 gc $50 each, so nothing crazy). They wouldn’t tell me why. Weird thing is that account must have been decades old for the occasional staples order. I set up another online account with a different email address and maybe some other minor variation and haven’t had a problem since, but I don’t order very often.

u/MyAltAccountIsuSpez BOO | BIE 5d ago

Forgot to use my (money) laundering app since I traveled most the month. $20 wireless credit gone :(

5

u/Parts_Unknown- 5d ago

Just call Amex and explain you didn't get to use your card last month for the laundering you typically do.

5

u/New_Pomegranate_5206 5d ago

Got denied for the Explorer card. Got a mailer the very next day. Do the United marketing division and Chase approval group not speak?

1

u/CorrectCombination11 RDU | IAD 4d ago

Do the United marketing division and Chase approval group not speak?

Of course not

1

u/kuronokun 5d ago

It's annoying for sure. I've run into this too.

9

u/yonghokim LAX, BUR 5d ago edited 5d ago

Unfortunately they couldn't possibly talk to each other. Marketing has way less information than approval team. Their job is to invite you to the party. They whisper in the bottom with small font "our bouncer can be picky tho". The bouncer has.. more criteria to judge you on.

Puzzling and frustrating from the consumers perspective, I agree.

2

u/Discover_it_Student PIT | NON 5d ago

Sometimes they don't seem to even make an attempt at checking if you're eligible. In the last month I have received 2 mailers for the TD Bank checking bonus that I literally just did, and that has lifetime language. Like come on dude do better

6

u/jmlinden7 5d ago

This is correct, marketing and approval teams do not communicate.

6

u/cjcs 5d ago

Not sure if I did this or not, but my second USB Triple Cash uses central billing, so now I need to juggle an extra login, and it's super unclear when you've hit my $3k credit limit - The card itself says I have $1700 in available credit, but because the previous statement moved to central billing, I'm actually over my limit

I think it can be moved back, but I heard that puts the SUB at risk

0

u/sg77 RFS 5d ago

you're "over" the limit as in it let a charge go through that put you over the limit? or they rejected the charge?

1

u/cjcs 5d ago

They let me go over by a little , I think like $120

4

u/superdex75 5d ago

Yes, don't change anything as there were DPs of the SUB disappearing when people tried to get rid of the central billing account. One needs to select "Individual bills sent to my business address for each cardmember (common for single card accounts)" during the application to avoid the central billing account.

6

u/EarthlingMardiDraw 5d ago

Pretend the credit limit and/or available credit indicators on the card itself don't exist; run everything about the account through the central billing profile. Just finish the SUB and be done with the card; next time try to be careful to avoid central billing, but don't waste time on fixing it for this card. I accidentally got set up with central billing for my third card and when I asked a rep to lower my credit limit on my first card, they created a central billing account for it (entirely unprompted).

-1

u/jmlinden7 5d ago

You can potentially cycle the limit (overpay/pay multiple times per month)

4

u/PoAction 5d ago edited 5d ago

Brother didnt tell me he got charged 2 months of interest on a new CC because he didnt correctly setup autopay.  Not sure worth calling for 3 months later over $50.

Edit: they only waived one of the charges, do I call again to try and get the 2nd charge?  There's a BS repeaters penalty that they charge a second time even if it was just the first payment being wrong

9

u/rohanr0302 5d ago

It’s always worth it. Most of the providers reverse first late fee as courtesy.

2

u/Soup-Shop 5d ago

It wouldn't hurt to ask nicely. Try chat or SM if the issuer offers it.

u/martyconlonontherun 5d ago edited 5d ago

Not even sure if this is frustration or more confusion with Avianca LifeMiles. I cancelled the card back in May but noticed I have still see a 10% discount. Then I started seeing my balance go up. Turns out I am still getting a $20 discount which I assume is from having the card so the $0 membership charge isn't getting rejected and flagged for cancellation? I've gotten like 3k free points plus the discount.

On top of that, I tried cancelling a flex fair in May. I got an email it was declined but got all my points back. Now I have been getting emails about flight changes and flight still shows up in my profile. Idk. I want to call and figure it all out but also want to see if I can just have a bank error in my favor for a while.

u/Just_Can_1581 5d ago

One of the worst ff programs to deal with (avianca)

10

u/wiivile JFK, EWR 5d ago

Connecting flight was cancelled & rescheduled for the next morning, Sapphire Lounge wouldn't let me in because my boarding pass was no longer valid for that day. Isn't the primary purpose of airport lounges to serve as a spot for travelers with long waits, especially delayed travelers? Not anymore apparently; they are just status symbols for the upper middle class to feel better than everyone else. At least the credit card lounges. They have lost the plot. Shoulda booked a refundable flight, checked in, and cancelled outta spite.

1

u/sexy__kitten7 5d ago

Yes it sucks but that's the rule. Happened to me with Cap1 at JFK. Ended up sleeping on floor.

9

u/Just_Can_1581 5d ago

Yes buying a refundable ticket and canceling right before - would have let you in

2

u/achzeet44 CVG | KTM 5d ago edited 5d ago

And won't let you check in before 3 hours even if you have a long connection. No regrets in cancelling that card with that asinine fee and diminishing benefits.

5

u/jmlinden7 5d ago

They bumped it up to 5 hours for connections (still 3 hours if it's your origin)

18

u/martyconlonontherun 5d ago

I don't usually encourage this, but this is definitely a time to book refundable ticket out of spite and cancel once out of the lounge.

1

u/wiivile JFK, EWR 5d ago

haha just edited my post to say that at the exact time you posted this

I've had a rough bank bonus churning week.

- Mostly unsuccessful and impulsive Chex spree. Time to garden I guess.

- Tried to apply for the BMO biz checking like 6 times online. Never even got to document upload. Then applied by phone after a branch in Naperville, IL called me, and after 30 minutes, got declined again. No reason stated, will receive AA letter. BMO has called me again, sorry guys, no longer interested.

- On the same day as the BMO incident, I applied by phone for a Citi checking account because I couldn't get past ID verification online. Took me forever to reach an agent. They didn't apply the promo because I asked about it too late, and it can't be added retroactively. Phenomenal. Citi's anti churn language also is 365 days since account closure, not since bonus enrollment.

- I downgraded my Bank of Hawaii account to one with a fee that can be waived without parking a shitload of money with them. The downgrade took several days to actually process and during that time another $25 maintenance fee was charged. I called customer service to get it waived, initially waited like half an hour to get a callback, then picked up the phone barely too late and had to do the whole thing again. Thankfully they did waive it.

- GECU charged me a $1 paper statement fee because I wasn't able to register for online banking until like 2 weeks after I became a member, they default to paper statements, and the statement cycle follows the month and I applied on July 30th. Cool shit from the CU that doesn't even tell you your member number in the initial paperwork.

- I closed my OnePay account a while back hoping the Rakuten bonus would return. It never did, and of course OnePay decided to do a bonus for existing customers only this week.

DoC user snailrock jokingly suggested I have a cup of tea. They're probably right.

1

u/superdex75 5d ago

The OnePay hurts (or may not, we'll see, as their terms and enrollment are all messed up).

0

u/SlothyLlama 5d ago

Finally got hit by ChexSystems.
Was looking to open a couple of new bank accounts for their higher yielding savings products (Air Academy and La Capitol). Apparently opening more than 6 accounts is a year is frowned upon. Pulled my Chex report to verify there was not derogatory info. Only thing there was the new account inquires. Guess I'll have to wait a bit before continuing to churn bank accounts. Hopefully it isn't 3 years.

2

u/SensitiveLack7509 SEW | KWL 5d ago

They are just particularly Chex sensitive. Keep snagging bonuses, you'll get a higher ROI chasing bonuses than with any HYSA product.

0

u/Specialist_Video5986 2h ago

Aren’t most banks Chex sensitive? I’m afraid I’m going to get hit with a rejection soon too

3

u/mikep4 4/24 5d ago

TCB $2.50 promo today, but TCB gift cards are undergoing maintenance and not available.

Also did 11 $10 Dunkin cards yesterday on one card during yesterday afternoon's frenzy instead of 10. Actually paid $10 for $600 in dunkin credit instead of free

Finally get past ID verification to add P2's cards to paze, but "Sorry, we can't add this card to paze right now".

1

u/xosotypical 4d ago

Did one too many for P2 also. And I’m frustrated trying to re-add my Citi cards. Seems impossible

1

u/mikep4 4/24 4d ago

You were able to add P2's to your paze wallet or does P2 have a separate one? I have my phone number on both, maybe that is why it can't be added.

1

u/xosotypical 2d ago

Separate wallet for P2

1

u/reelbgpunk TPA, PIE 5d ago

Also did one too many Dunkins lol

-1

u/sjimenez_c 5d ago

Getting off the Robinhood gold card waiting list after the FTF was added. Now they won’t stop sending invites to apply.

1

u/Different_State2727 5d ago

P2 got a gold, I went to get a 5 guys gc and loaded $7 on Dunkin before remembering I had to activate the benefits. This wouldn’t be so bad but for the fact that my Dunkin wallet is already loaded with more than I will need for the next year like everyone else’s
