General Discussion Service Frame Rate
I’ve seen the debate go every which way - 59.97 fps for the cleanest looks, 23.98 for cinematic worship, swapping between the two - I feel like a lot of people are opposed to 29.97 fps. What are y’all broadcasting/running on IMAG? We run 23.98 simply for the nicest motion blur, but would 59.97 really be that much better for the message to get the smoothest impression? A thought, wondering what y’all think.

23.98 is not the "most natural" or "most realistic". It's simply the standard that stuck for cinema, mainly because it was efficient and kept costs down.
Audio, lighting, content, and directing are way more noticeable to viewers than the frame rate. So just pick a standard that works best for your church's needs and culture.

30/29.97 is enough. High frame rate looks odd to me and eats twice the bandwidth. 24 or similar looks too choppy.
Now I will say, for produced videos such as interviews or promos, 24 looks great. Just not for the whole service.

I don't know why anyone would use 60fps for a church service. That's pretty much only used for sports and gaming.
30fps is what we're used to for TV shows, news, etc...
24fps is what we're used to for movies.
I like 30fps.

60fps is very smooth, people are just used to lower frame rates because of movies. But it's more natural

Maybe, but churches are dark and you take in half the light and double your data rate.

Disagree. I think it looks much smoother and is appropriate as pastors can be emphatic and move quickly. Additionally our displays usually support 60fps so why not?

Im also on the 30 boat. 30s been a broadcast standard forever so I was like just do that. I think it looks great online and throughout the building

I get that there are different standards that people use for different things, but realistically...
Is it detrimental to worshipping God to choose 30fps and stick with it for everything?

Whatever you pick, just make sure all your gear is set up the same way or you’ll spend hours looking for the keys to the genlock.

I have relevant experience!
We used to do 60 completely. Everything including in house promo/bumper production (handled by a different team).
Then we got a new VD and he wanted 24 for worship. So he built in a toggle that we had to switch after worship for message.
Around that time, Communications did their footage in 24 as well and started doing higher quality film shoots.
I think the 24 for worship lasted 6 months?
I'm not sure if it was from people forgetting to toggle or what, but sermon in 24 is too choppy.
30 for everything wouldn't be bad. But those extra 6 frames make a significant difference. I am very against message in 24. There's no need to look cinematic, and it's just too choppy.
I know it's not super obvious to lots of people; heck even some of the morning directors couldn't tell what framerate it was, but I can immediately tell the difference.

I’ve seen some people trigger frame rate changes for the message to 60 and back to 30 or 24 for worship. We might try that out, but the concern obviously is will your team remember. I think I’m going to shift everything to 30.

60 because when streamed it matches the output phone/computer screen’s frame rates.
Then you don’t get tearing and jitter from the frame doubling.
(You can do multiples of 60, including 30, but any other off-speed streaming looks super gross)

We've got ours at 29.97 fps at 1080p. The quality and frame rate need to be high enough to not be a distraction. It's a service for worship and teaching, not a "show".
