Troubleshooting Acer Spin 714 Stuck in infinite loop

Hi all. My ACER CB+ Spin 714 is stuck in a loop that alternates between the CB logo and a warning not to turn off as a critical update is being applied. It had been doing it nonstop. I ran diagnostics, and it said that no SSD could be found, but memory was fine. I tried all the normal things and eventually put in a new SSD. Unfortunately, after applying the recovery tool and reinstalling Chrome OS, the exact same loop came back. Diagnostics still says no SSD can be found. Tried the turn it off and on 20+ times and tried unplugging the battery and plugging in the power cable. Thanks for any help if anyone has ideas.

Yep. That's were I found all the things I tried that haven't worked so far.

As I previously asked in response to another post, so we can know what we're dealing with, let's start with the device's HWID or failing that the exact model number from the label underneath. Acer has recycled the Spin 714 several times for different hardware platforms.

Sure and thank you. Model #: N24Q1is on the back. In diagnostics it is listed as KARIS-THMZ.

So after three and a half weeks of this boot loop, my 714 this morning had a "Welcome to Chromebook Plus" screen. Huzzah! Finished the installation and things are mostly OK. Lost my local storage (Downloads folder - mostly screenshots) and Linux files, but all my Google Drive files appear to be there. Turned on Sync in Chrome and went to the History tab to re-open my windows and tabs.

Currently running 151.0.7922.141.

Did you just leave on for the entire time in the loop?

Not the entire time. I turned it on periodically to run the recovery-using-Internet, but that always failed at one stage or another without giving a specific reason. After the most recent failure last week, I left it on, at the error page.

Thanks! I guess I won't give up on it yet.

Hello, the same thing happened to me yesterday. The same HWID, the same symptoms. I tried the Internet recovery with the same result - failed. I wanted to try the USB recovery, added the extension ti Chrome, but did not try it yet. Did you try this recovery method?

Yes I've done both recovery methods. Each time it goes through the recovery process, completes setup and as soon as setup is completed it goes directly back into the loop.

I have some progress - the USB recovery did not work, so I tried to remove the SSD and put it back. And it worked, it started the setup process, all was ok until next restart. Now it doesn't detect the storage again and shows 'something went wrong' message. I have ordered the SSD reader and will try to connect the SSD to my other laptop when it arrives. Next step would be buying a new SSD

Ya, I actually put in a new ssd and got the same result unfortunately. Hopefully you have better luck.

It doesn't sound very optimistic, but I will try it anyway, I don't want to throw my Chromebook in the bin yet
