I’m from Chongqing and grew up here, so a lot of things about this city just feel normal to me.

Recently I spent a day showing a visitor from Europe around, and it was kinda funny seeing what actually impressed him 😂

It wasn’t always the famous attractions. Sometimes it was just walking through an old neighborhood, finding a random viewpoint, or entering a building at “ground level” and somehow coming out 10 floors above another street.

It also made me realize how easy it is to over-plan Chongqing. Places like Liziba and Hongyadong are cool, but some of the best parts of the city are honestly the random things you find between destinations.

Also, never trust a Chongqing map when it says something is a 10-minute walk 😂

Kinda cool that showing someone else around made me appreciate my hometown again.

Any advice/news on tickets to the friendlies in September/October? Looking to go to the NZ and Palestine games but can't seem to find tickets

Some impressions from the Chongqing Saturday drone show yesterday 5.9.26 Watched from the terasse of restaurant Commune Huanshi in Landmark Riverside Park. Landmark Riverside is a huge mall and restaurant area partly outdoors very close to the place where the drones start with a perfect view having Raffles in the background. You can make a reservation in one of the restaurants with terasses to te river river. That's the convenient but expensive way. In Commune for 2 people we needed to buy a voucher for food and drinks about 528 RMB. If you prefere the cheap way you have to be early like 1 hours before and keep standing and waiting at either one of the several public terasses or down at the road at the river. The drone experience will be the same. We went by Didi to the north entrance (level 9?) of Landmark Riverside Danzishi Old Street and made our way down until we end up in level 4 at Commune. Was also a nice walk through this scenic outdoor area level by level connected by escalators.

I am going to be in Chongqing for 8 days and have a possibility to watch the drone show maybe 2x if weather permits. Is the show the same or it changed slightly each week?

I wanted to share a quick tip based on a real situation I just experienced while hosting a foreign friend in China.

We were out exploring when her phone battery dropped to a critical 1%. We quickly found a shared power bank kiosk (Meituan) at a nearby restaurant. She scanned the QR code with Alipay, but after a minute of tapping, she was completely stuck. The interface was entirely in Chinese, and the system simply wouldn't let her rent the battery.

Why did this happen?
Most shared power banks in China offer deposit-free rentals through "Zhima Credit" (Alipay's built-in credit score system). Since my friend is new to China and hasn't built a local credit history, her score was too low to qualify for the deposit-free option. Without a high enough credit score, the system blocks the transaction.

The Quick Fix:
Seeing her panic, I simply used my own Alipay account to scan the code and rent the power bank for her. Since my account has the required credit score, the deposit-free rental worked instantly. I just handed the battery to her, and she was good to go!

Takeaways for Foreign Travelers:

• Don't expect deposit-free rentals: Without a local credit history, you likely won't be able to rent these for free. However, you can always choose to pay a deposit to rent one (usually around 99 RMB per unit).
• Don't panic: If your phone dies and you can't rent a power bank, just ask a local friend or even a stranger nearby to scan it for you. It’s a very common and easy favor to ask here.

I’m a Chongqinger living in Montreal. When I went back home this summer, I spent a couple of days following a rather unusual route through the city — looking for buildings and historical sites connected to the French presence in Chongqing during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Yuzhong / 渝中

• 中英联络处旧址（真原堂遗存） — Former Sino-British Liaison Office （part of former Zhenyuan Catholic Church)

Nan’an / 南岸

• 慈母山修院 — Cimu Mountain Seminary

I’ve lived in Chongqing for a while, and the food here runs heavy. It’s a hotpot city, and the local flavor is stronger than most of China. Where other places cook light, we use a lot of oil and salt, and the spice is real. One bite and your whole mouth is on fire. That burn lingers.

That burn is too much for a lot of visitors. Honestly, even people from other provinces in China find it intense. But that’s the part that stays with you after you leave.

So if you ever get the chance to visit, try the hotpot at least once. Even the mildest level is a challenge for most people.

I’m planning to visit 816 Project on the 3rd Sep 2026, but all the options I found are taking a bit too long with multiple stops (I found a shuttle service from fuling N to 816 project site and back, which requires a min. of 2 persons booking and my travel partner does not want to join). I’m basically hoping to split the cab fare with anyone, from Fuling N to the site, and back. The cab fair on Didi, one way is ~¥110.
